Council Committee Trims Mayor’s Proposed Budget

The City Council’s Budget and Appropriations Committee on Saturday completed its work massaging Mayor Bill Finch’s spending plan for the budget year starting July 1. The recommended budget the council is expected to receive Monday night at 7 p.m. increases taxes by $54 on the average homeowner, about half of what the mayor had proposed.

What the council’s budget committee brings to the full council is generally a done deal. The council is scheduled to meet Monday 7 p.m. in City Council Chambers, 45 Lyon Terrace. Once the council approves the budget it goes back to the mayor for possible veto action. The council will set the mil rate in June. Council agenda:

  1. Positively, unequivocally, clearly, without causing doubt and confusion, there will be No New Taxes for the good people of Bassport (our new name) for the fiscal year 2015 – 2016 budget.

I’d like to thank the Mayor ahead of time for this kind and thoughtful gesture.

  2. It will be amusing to see if the city council actually reduces expenses, such as eliminating unnecessary departments or positions, or if they simply change some figures to reflect a decrease in appropriations or an increase in revenues.

    1. There will be no reductions of expenses, no eliminating jobs, it will be business as usual, support Finch and you will be rewarded. His next favor … err hiring will be a close friend to head the legal dept … stay tuned.

  3. Any truth to the rumor Tiago gets a take-home car as part of his package? I guess he needs one in case a hole in the street suddenly opens up.

  4. Well whoop de doo. Another tax increase from a totally incompetent mayor implemented by a totally gutless City Council. What a shock.

  5. It’s great that after all this time you were able to effectively walk the dog when it comes to taxes.
Just so you know, Bridgeport was rated in the top ten of communities with mortgages underwater. Steve, isn’t it marvelous we keep winning these awards?
