Ganim Cruises To Primary Win Over Gomes

Mayor Joe Ganim, according to unofficial returns, defeated opponent John Gomes by roughly 1,000 votes in the redo Democratic primary for mayor, winning both the walk-in and absentee ballot counts.

Ganim defeated Gomes on the machines 3,609 to 3,335. By absentee 1,339 to 566.

Unofficial totals, Ganim 4,948, Gomes 3,901.

In an unexpected turn of events, the turnout for Tuesday’s special primary redo eclipsed the September vote that led Superior Court Judge William Clark to order a new vote based on absentee ballot irregularities.

This time, however, according to unofficial returns, Ganim leads the walk-in vote against his opponent.

In the final weeks of the redo Ganim revamped his message contrasting his record against an opponent who sought revenge after Ganim fired him last year. The Gomes campaign as well, after benefiting from absentee ballot gaffes by Ganim operatives, had its own issues in recent weeks including Connecticut Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas filing a complaint with the State Elections Enforcement Commission over dubious dissemination of absentee applications.

On Tuesday’s vote Gomes performed well in areas hostile to Ganim including high turnout Black Rock, but Ganim ran up large numbers in return, particularly in Black and Hispanic precincts such as Wilbur Cross, Hallen, Dunbar and JFK.

In this peculiar election cycle, another general election is scheduled February 27. Gomes has secured a line with the Bridgeport Independent Party but if he moves forward he will certainly be money challenged as he was in the final weeks of the primary redo.

      1. “In an unexpected turn of events, the turnout for Tuesday’s special primary redo was larger than the September vote…”

Lennie, I predicted Ganim will win by 1,237 votes I believe. I heard what you said when you read my prediction: “Speedy, PLEASE take your meds and get some rest”.

I can’t think when I’m resting. In order for my prediction to be as accurate; a higher turnout was a must; Ganim had to win on both the machine and ABs.

I didn’t expect the Black Rock Vote to be as high. I had volunteered to lead the charge at P.T. but, not without a good team of bilingual speakers and that didn’t materialize. P.T. is a sleeping giant.

I projected the unofficial results as 4937 for Ganim and 3,700. Giving Joe Ganim a victory with 1,237 votes.

I expected slightly higher numbers on the North End for Ganim. The North End has a high number of immigrants and students who can’t register to vote.

Then there was Jimfox, JML, The Spain Klan, and Gen Now raining on my parade. This is the last election for me after 37 years. Sadly, my late son passed away 17 years to the day of a historical election and the results makes me feel better.

Lennie, what happen to dinner or lunch with you for posters who come closest to election results?

    1. No doubt about that. They are also saying she’s kinda cute too. 😜

IDK Speed, I always thought they would be, somewhat, pacifist and wean teh people off of Trump and eventually endorse Desantis. I just didn’t think it was for Haley.

I can’t see semi-dementia geriatric Biden or semi-moronic Trump. Desantis dropping out paves the way for her to best Trump. 🙂

      #voices in your head. 🤣

  1. If John Gomes wants to raise money for another election he better start selling apples on a street corner in Black Rock, and practice not acting like an angry thug. ( Make sure you stop by city hall and get a permit to sell your apples John). I’m sure he will have time for quiet reflection at his campaign headquarters to figure out his next move as most workers have probably packed up and moved on. Now that’s a good idea John Gomes pack up and move on, haven’t you caused yourself enough disappointment and embarrassment.
