Big Mac Joins Board Of National League Of Cities

News release from the city:

Bridgeport’s City Council President Tom McCarthy has been elected to serve a one-year term as a member of the National League of Cities (NLC) Board of Directors. In this new role, McCarthy will play a key role in guiding decision-making for the nation’s largest membership organization for city officials.

“This is great news for Bridgeport, Conn.,” said Mayor Bill Finch. “As Council President, Tom McCarthy is working to make smart investments in the future of our city. He’s helping Bridgeport get better every day. And, this new national position is well deserved.”

McCarthy is one of 14 elected officials–and four state municipal league directors–who were voted in at a recent NLC conference. Each board member is selected by a 15 person nominating committee, and are confirmed by a vote from all of the entire organizations membership. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns, and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.

“It is an honor to be elected to NLC’s Board of Directors,” said McCarthy. “In this role, I will have an opportunity to collaborate with my fellow elected officials from across the nation to help build stronger communities, safer neighborhoods, and jobs and economic opportunities for Bridgeport and cities throughout the country,” says McCarthy. “I look forward to working with the National League of Cities to learn best practices and innovative policies from nationally renowned experts and elected leaders to better serve the people of the Park City.”

  1. Well gee whiz, another Bridgeport politician named to a national board. Now we have two idiots on national boards, Finch and McCarthy. Here is a quote from McCarthy when talking about his appointment. ‘Build stronger communities, safer neighborhoods, and jobs and economic opportunities for Bridgeport and cities throughout the country,’ says McCarthy.” My question here is why hasn’t he done that here in Bridgeport? Tom McCarthy has done squat to bring permanent jobs to Bridgeport. He has set up along with the mayor zero training programs for the poor and unskilled. Tom McCarthy is a windbag and a do-nothing except what he is told.

  2. Just another example of meaningless waste of taxpayer money. Nothing more than an ego trip. I am familiar with NLC. This is the organization that has conferences (junkets) attended by our illustrious city council members costing taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars. They are nothing more than mini-vacations. It is not unusual for the Bridgeport city council members to reflect 2/3 of the elected officials attending from Connecticut. Other cities, such as Stamford, do not allow this drivel.
