Mayor Finch, officials and kids celebrate new splash pad.

From Mayor Bill Finch:

On Friday, Mayor Bill Finch cut the ribbon on the brand new splash pad at Newfield Park.

The splash pad is the latest addition to the East End park, which has had many upgrades and improvements by the City’s Public Facilities department during the last two years including the dedication of tennis courts to Robert “Bobby” McIntosh in 2010, and construction of a barbecue shelter in 2011.

“We are committed to providing residents with beautiful and active parks throughout the City. We’ve worked with the East End community to make upgrades to this park so it offers something for everyone in the neighborhood,” said Mayor Bill Finch. “The addition of a splash pad will give East End kids a place to cool off on hot summer days. This is the fourth splash pad installed in the City, and all of them have been very popular with both parents and children.”

Improvements to Newfield Park are the result of collaboration between the City, the East End Neighborhood Revitalization Zone (NRZ) and the East End Community Council.

The splash pad construction by Concrete Creations LLC began earlier this summer. Fuss & O’Neil Landscape Architects and Engineers designed the splash pad, swing set, and parks maintenance addition to the restrooms.

  1. Congrats to the mayor and the city on improving Newfield park. Partial congrats to the mayor for the park on Knowlton St., too bad no one is using it. I have one suggestion, put playground equipment there so kids can actually use the park.

  2. I wonder if this playground is where Chris Murphy has been spending 78% of his time:

The fact of the matter is that Congressman Murphy’s attendance record is so bad, a recent Greenwich Time headline blared, “Murphy AWOL for three-fourths of hearings” and compared him to the most notorious fictional Hollywood slacker of all-time: Ferris Bueller!

Well, it’s time for Chris Murphy to grow up and start taking some responsibility for his actions (or inactions) while in Congress.

And it’s time for Chris Murphy to finally come clean with the people of Connecticut by answering three simple questions:
    • Congressman Murphy, will you release the meeting-by-meeting attendance records for all of your committee hearings?
    • Since you didn’t attend the vast majority of your committee hearings, where did you get the information that led you to your votes?
    • Since you didn’t attend the exceptionally important committee hearings during the time of the 2008 financial crisis, will you release your October 2008 schedule to explain to the people of Connecticut where you were specifically during each of those missed committee hearings?

Linda understands that running for the U.S. Senate is serious business meant for serious people. Unfortunately, until Chris Murphy accepts responsibility for his failed congressional attendance record, tells the truth about why he missed nearly 80% of his committee hearings, and explains exactly where he was, no one should give him serious consideration for a promotion to the United States Senate.

  3. *** Best not let donj read your comments about his boy C. Murphy whom donj will probably end up voting for, “no jobs plan” and all! I was pulling for Shays but now that he’s out of it, I’m leaning towards Linda hoping for something fresh and different from the same old bad attendance, no jobs plan, typical career politician that Murphy seems to be. Now back to the nice new splash pad in the East End; how many in the blog picture above actually had something to do with pushing for, getting funds and approval, or supervising the project, etc.? Hope the neighborhood enjoys it and the kids don’t vandalize it before the summer’s over! Maybe next year they can put one at Seaside and Wentfield Parks for the South End and West Side kids, no? I can feel the cool sensation of the water drops trickling through my thick golden locks of hair just thinking of it! *** Did Someone Blog, “WIG?” ***

  4. The attendance issue is a nonstarter for me–the question is did he read the transcripts regarding the meetings he didn’t attend–CSPAN doesn’t always show it but sometimes no one is in the chamber even though someone is talking–100% attendance in school does not necessarily make you an A student–it just means you showed up but it doesn’t mean you’ve done any homework!!! So look at the voting record–not the attendance record–did he vote the way you think he should have on the issue.

Regarding the “Job Plan”–go the BPL Historical Collections Room and you’ll find lots of development plans crafted by well attended meetings that never got implemented–so just because a plan is created doesn’t mean it has value or life.

I am not supporting either person in my comment–just trying to get people to think–attendance does not translate into meaningful action–and we all recall attending classes that were a waste of time–and other classes that were very worthwhile.

I don’t think we “vote” for politicians to attend “meetings”–we vote for them to represent us–there is a difference.
