How Quick City Council Meeting?

The City Council meeting Monday night could be lightning fast. They generally are on the eve of an election, even though members of the legislative body are not up for election until next year. Move the question. All in favor? Sayonara. (See agenda here.)

Then it’s off to a campaign rally, last-minute phone calls, maybe a watering hole or two to conspire with other political operatives on Election Day turnout and a friendly wager or two or three.

Then there’s the question, how many council members will even show up Monday night? Who’s least likely to attend?

  1. Is the Consent Calendar, listing matters for Council decision but allowing them if unopposed to be passed by one vote instead of many, a form of “palm card” for those too busy to develop their own information and viewpoint for the matter at hand? Is it a way to keep the discussion on items and the handouts that are reviewed away from members of the public who may not attend a committee meeting where they have no right to speak out? Time will tell.

  2. You know Len, when I was first on the council no one paid any attention to what was on the agenda before even year elections. And I would always find a few things to at least make them sound controversial just so I would have something to talk about at the polls the next day.
Meetings preceding city elections would normally have a few dicey items because the city was trying to get them resolved on the current council year.
But even when they would do a good job with cleaning up their act and agenda, I would normally turn to McCarthy and say “aren’t you ever going to learn your lesson?” To which he would reply there’s nothing controversial on tonight’s agenda and I would respond “Oh no? Watch me!”
I am sure I could find a few juicy items on that agenda or at least create some. To the good old daze.
