News release from Mayor’s Office:
City of Bridgeport is alerting residents of repairs to the East Washington Avenue Bridge over the Bridgeport Harbor that will temporary close The East Washington Bridge on Tuesday, November 21, 2017. The purpose of this project is to help accomplish electrical repairs due to storm and salt water damage. A detour route has been made available to offset the closure. The traffic will be routed to River Street from Knowlton Street heading west and North Washington Avenue to River Street from Housatonic Avenue heading east.
The road will be closed in both directions on Tuesday, November 21st for approximately 8 hours beginning at 8:00 A.M.
For further information, please contact Bridgeport Public Facilities at (203) 576-7130.
Where is the money coming from for these repairs?
Reverend Stallworth’s church had a bake sale.
Don’ have time to research this afternoon, but I seem to remember somewhere about two-three months ago, the City announcing that the former $30 Million bridge redo (likely to have inflated to $50 Million or more over a decade) could now be put into service for about $12 Million. The reduction in expense had to do with the type if bridge contemplated. Originally the bridge was designed to raise or turn to allow barge or boat traffice access north of the bridge location.
Observers have noted that there has been no traffic of that type so that a stationary bridge might do just fine. Did the current Council bond for that, or part of it? That’s where I would start my research. Perhaps OIB has a story? Time will tell.
