Supremes, 6-3, Rule Against Trump’s Tariffs, Lamont: Americans Have Been Paying The Price

Statement from Governor Lamont:

Governor Ned Lamont released the following statement regarding today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision affirming that President Donald Trump does not have the authority to issue sweeping tax increases in the form of tariffs without Congressional approval:

“Today the Supreme Court made it clear that presidents do not have the unilateral authority to implement tax increases on Americans in the form of tariffs without Congressional approval. These tariffs have been doing nothing but increasing the costs of groceries, clothing, and other essential goods and Americans have been paying the price.

“At a time when my administration is focused on bringing down costs for businesses and families, these tariffs did the opposite. My administration will continue fighting against policies like this that raise costs for working families. I am appreciative of Connecticut’s Congressional delegation and Attorney General Tong’s office for fighting against these unlawful backdoor tax increases.”

From Congressman Jim Himes:

“Last week, Congress voted to reclaim its authority on tariffs against Canada and today, the Supreme Court validated what we’ve known for almost a year — that the President’s sweeping tariffs were a gross abuse of the law. This ruling is an important reminder that the President does not possess absolute economic authority, and that the other two branches of government will continue to serve as checks on his power. While today’s decision took far too long, Americans will no longer have to shoulder the economic burden of Donald Trump’s petty grievances.  I also hope that this ruling will help to stabilize the United States economy and restore some trust among our international partners that our trade relationship does not rest solely on the whims of a volatile and vengeful leader.”

  1. You did not mention that in its reporting this afternoon on the tariff decision, The Wall Street Journal recounted that at the moment an aide informed Trump of the 6-3 decision against his tariffs, Trump was meeting with governors in Washington for a National Governors Association meeting. The WSJ quoted our Governor Ned Lamont observing Trump’s reaction firsthand: “I thought his head was going to explode.”
