Mayor Declares Storm Emergency

From city website:

Mayor Bill Finch has declared a snow emergency for the state’s largest city beginning post-Super Bowl @ midnight (12:00AM, Feb. 2, 2015).

The snow emergency has been declared so that public facilities road crews can effectively remove snow during efforts aimed at keeping kids and families safe across the city.

It will last at least through the entire day on Monday, Feb. 2. During the snow emergency, there will be no parking on any of the designated Snow Emergency Streets, and all vehicles on other streets across the city are to park on the even-side of the street by midnight. A list of Snow Emergency Streets can be found here: www.bridgeportct.gov/snowemergencystreets.

“As always, we’re preparing for the worst, and hoping for the best. Our city rallied together to successfully beat back potentially harmful road conditions caused by the snow. And, we know we’re up for the challenge again. In order to keep kids and families safe across the city, we’re asking everyone to abide by the snow emergency conditions. If you have questions, please call the Bridgeport EOC hotline at (203) 579-3829. Stay safe, stay home, and if you are traveling tonight or tomorrow, be smart.”

If you are unable to find street parking during the snow emergency, the following parking lots are available:
– All schools during off hours.
– Surface parking lots across the street from the Ballpark at Harbor Yard
– North End Library, 3455 Madison Ave.
– Veterans Memorial Park (entrance off Madison Avenue)
– Municipal Parking Lot located on the corner of Fairfield Avenue and Jetland Street (adjacent to 2895 Fairfield Ave.)
– Health Department at 752 East Main St.
– Lot adjacent to the former Waltersville School, 95 Gilmore St.

Garbage and recycling pickups scheduled for Monday have been cancelled. Pickup schedule will be pushed back one day. The Transfer Station will be closed on Monday.

  1. It is difficult to know the boundaries of an emergency. But the Mayor has indicated midnight on February 1, 2015 will be the start. Street closings are specifically mentioned, but no other closings are posted yet on the City site.

School closings are the province of the Superintendent/BOE I imagine (or as with a couple of other City activities, there may be some “shared” authority, responsibility or control.) Haven’t seen the paperwork, myself.

What I am curious about is the City side. Does a Snow Emergency shut City offices, for instance? City taxes due for January 1, 2015 have until February 2 for payment and lines I observed on Friday probably mean there would be lines on Monday. Will that roll over to February 3? After all, that is the way refuse and recycling collections seem to work.

Also on the City docket is a City Council meeting at 7:00 PM. There is a public session beforehand at 6:30PM, and according to the City Agenda sent out there are four people addressing the Council. I happen to be listed first, followed by three folks who seem to be talking about “good news” in Bridgeport. My topic is about City purchases and asset management, generally a dry subject, but perhaps will create some heat or interest to fight the chill outside. And imagine, three other speakers addressing the good happening in the City. Come on down, please. It is free. No admission. Perhaps the program has been constructed for your listening pleasure. Rather than WATCHDOGS and WHISTLEBLOWERS? Will the meeting be held? Postponed? Canceled? Time will tell.

    1. JML, I think it would be safe to say the City will be closed today, Monday and Monday evening. I am sure the tax collector will be happy to take your money on Tuesday.

      1. Steve,
Are you wearing your “official unelected City Hall rep” hat with this announcement, or is just another casual comment that may cause someone who waits until tomorrow to have their tax accepted but also pay the State-set 18% interest?
The Mayor keeps that brave smile on his face daily with the tag line about “Bridgeport getting better every day.” But who is putting up the money? Today’s taxpayers and tomorrow’s taxpayers, and do they recognize the money Finch and team are spending daily? Do they or the CC know the bonded money being used daily to buy stuff and services? Where are the City watchdogs, assuming you have heard no barking from the CC for years? Where are the whistleblowers, as a last line of defense? Steve, any answers on the subject of money? Time will tell.
