From Santa Lucia:
Students rally together to stage “Lights in the Night” holiday concert
WHAT: Determined not to let a favorite holiday tradition fade away, five local students will perform highlights from the Lucia pageant and other Christmas favorites at a free concert on Friday entitled “Lights in the Night.” This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Lucia pageant at Salem Lutheran Church in Bridgeport.
BACKGROUND: When the adults who have organized the annual Lucia Festival decided that the event had run its course, the high school students who have participated in the pageant since they were young children said, “The show must go on!” Together, they are organizing “Lights in the Night,” a concert that captures the essence of the Santa Lucia story of bringing light into the darkness of deep winter. The Lucia Festival has been celebrated at Salem Lutheran Church since 1951.
WHO: The five local students who are organizing and performing in the concert are Katie Adams of Bridgeport (Notre Dame ’13), Carin Gannon of Fairfield (Fairfield Warde High School ’12), Katherine Johnson of Bridgeport (Saint Joseph High School ’12), Megan Watts of Fairfield (Lauralton Hall ’15), and Hannah Wilkins of Bridgeport (Hopkins School ’14).
QUOTE: “Lucia is such a great Swedish tradition in our multicultural community. Every year people from all over the area come to enjoy the performance. The adults who normally organize this put in so much time, it’s probably overwhelming. Hopefully we can give them a break with our ‘Lights in the Night’ concert and they can pick it up again next year!” explained Katherine Johnson, who performed the role of Lucia in 2010.
WHERE: Salem Lutheran Church, 3160 Park Avenue in Bridgeport, CT.
WHEN: Friday, December 9, 2011 at 7:30 P.M.
COST: The concert is free and open to the public–you don’t have to be Swedish to enjoy this holiday classic!
