Paging Sinners And Saints–Lamont And Ganim Trade Barbs In Debate Battle

In a political world of sinners and very few saints, party-endorsed Ned Lamont and Mayor Joe Ganim squared off Thursday night in New Haven for their first head-to-head debate in advance of the August 14 Democratic primary for governor. Shared coverage follows:

From Neil Vigdor, Hartford Courant:

The hostilities between Ned Lamont and Joe Ganim–the last two Democrats standing in the governor’s race–reached a fever pitch Thursday night in the first head-to-head debate of their primary match-up.

The rivals spent more time attacking each other than Republicans during a raucous, televised event at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven.

Nothing was off limits, especially Ganim’s seven years in federal prison for public corruption and questions about whether Lamont laid off employees from his telecommunications company.

  1. I was honestly surprised by Lamont’s performance. He really took it to Ganim on raising taxes by 29% and then flatfunding our schools. Lamont chastised him for how unfair it was to the kids.

Joe Ganim denied flatfunding the Bridgeport Public Schools. He looked off balance and denied it.

Let’s be absolutely clear. Ganim has proposed three consecutive budgets with not one additional dollar for our schools.

In 2016,2017 Ganim proposed a ZERO increase and the City Council passed a flatfunded BOE Budget.

In 2017/2018 Ganim proposed a ZERO increase and the City Council appropriated $397,000.

In 2018/2019 Ganim proposed a,ZERO increase and the City Council appropriated $1.1 million.

    Ned Lamont was 100% accurate.

Under Ganim, the BOE has only received 4.5% of the requested increase appropriation it has requested.

      1. She must have trouble with numbers. She only knows numbers when it is give me more for BOE . The BOE could have a hundred million dollars and still say it’s not enough

          1. Once again, not a city employee. Just someone who knows how to do math. Here is an equation that works Maria Pereira moving away equals a better City of Bridgeport.

  2. *** Frankly who really cares about this debate? *** What we should be talking about was the Fed. GOP Congress kangaroo court about senseless emails by a male to female FBI agent about political nonsense that the republicans continue to cry wolf about! This is what the fed. republican Senate & Congress has come to since Trump’s election after 50% of the GOP party did not support Trump in the begining stages. Now its time to spend money on new red, white & blue Boeing Air Force One planes! And Trump ready to consider pulling out of Nato Military Exercises in the Baltics per request from Putin. Trump the republican candidate weather they wanted him or not, & voted for by millions of white nationalist & is now the President of the USA. Actions speak louder than words, no? *** Maybe time might tell, no? ***

      1. Derik Brown, Coming from an impotent Eunuch I find your comment hysterical. I am laughing so hard as well as all of Lennie’s readers . I am hysterical that the ice- coffee just came out of my nose. You are just so funny. What an inappropriate comment and response to a simple comment .I am not sure what your comment -no minorities or woman meant but I am sure it was just a cute comment from a disturbed, jealous and hateful piece of shit. Lennie is so fortunate to have your commentary. Everyone else just shaking their head. Really just shaking my head. I am enjoying my lunch, as always your thoughtful comments make my day.

  3. Steven if it was a Bridgeport’s mayoral race I could see your enthusiasm. Maria’s right up until that exchange where Ned when after JG2’s record on taxes and school funding. Joe was stronger. That knocked Joe off balance and was on the defense thereafter. Ned took advantage of this and had a strong powerful ending where he talked about uniting, and the negative of pitting rich against poor, cities against towns. That’s Joe’s game and it was somewhat deflated. Joe contrasted it by saying he was blessed, not as blessed as Ned, but blessed. Which I found ironic considering Joe’s projecting himself as a sinner with a future. Everyone has a passed and everyone has future, what that is, well, ? If Ned continues that same powerful message Joe will have to run solely on his record. Which the first one didn’t end so will and JG2’s record is what it is. Outside of Bridgeport I don’t think it was an excellent debate for Joe, Steven. I see a double edge sword here Steven, Ned can’t attack Joe for his pass corruption out right, which he did skillfully, and Joe can’t continue to make this race about “bathrooms.” Considering both were blessed and they are looking to move into the same residence with nine fireplaces, nine bathrooms, a pool and a pergola. If Joe doesn’t win or have a strong showing, there’s blood in the water for his reelection with plenty of sharks in the water, wouldn’t you say Steven, What’s Joe’s future, be it sinner or saint, time will tell? https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xygh2p

    1. Robert T, My enthusiasm- I thought it was a great debate and the spotlight was on Bridgeport. I had nothing negative to say about Ned and I did not say that Ganim did a fantastic job. I did say it was a great debate and Joe was in front of the entire state.

  4. Last month, Ganim’s petition victory neutralized Lamont’s money and last night Ganim’s debate performance neutralized Lamont’s endorsement.
The Mayor is gaining on it. We’re learning retail skills have a televised counterpart. The video persuasion has begun.
    Advantage: Ganim

    1. Loical Eyes I have to agree with you. I don’t think Lamont lost, I do think Ganim won on many levels. I was proud of our Mayor and Our City.

      1. Local Eyes, Bob Walsh never lost a job as a political consultant, he consults for candidates and elections of his choosing. It does it free, no one could put a price on his knowledge and experience.

        1. Bob Walsh lost his job as a political consultant the moment the polls closed on election day.
When you know more about Bridgeport politics than I do, use these pages to articulate your superiority.

      1. The eyes of the tiger were in full observational mode. It’s too early to pounce. It’s better to understand your surroundings because, at this point, to break even is to win.
To peak too soon is to show all your cards and appease your base.
That’s why the tiger is pleased.

  5. Lamont’s destructive tendencies started early. Here’s what I mean:
In 1978 and 1980, newspaper companies were granted a tax break to build expensive cable tv systems. These ideas-passed by Congress-originated in Greenwich, CT. and backstopped/eliminated risk.
When government guarantees and directs your investment, it’s not called Capitalism and when you follow their lead, you shouldn’t be called an entrepreneur.
Lamont got a tax break for a technology that’s becoming outdated. He made millions for doing then what Facebook does now for free!
