Education Rally On Tuesday–Carmen Lopez: Reject ‘Banana Republic’

Education activists have planned a 6 p.m. rally for Tuesday at City Hall, 45 Lyon Terrace. Mayoral candidates who have been invited are urging supporters to attend the event. This release was issued by retired Superior Court Judge Carmen Lopez:

A COALITION OF COMMUNITY GROUPS IS SPONSORING A “PEOPLE’S CONVENTION TO SAVE OUR CHILDREN” EVENT ON TUESDAY, JULY 26, 2011. THE ACTIVITY WILL GET UNDERWAY SHORTLY AFTER 6: P. M. AND WILL BE HELD ON THE STEPS OF BRIDGEPORT CITY HALL, 45 LYON TERRACE.

THE RALLY IS BEING BILLED AS A “PEOPLE’S CONVENTION.” ORGANIZERS SAY THAT THE GROUPS CAME TOGETHER FOLLOWING THE VOTE OF THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO REPLACE BRIDGEPORT’S ELECTED BOARD OF EDUCATION WITH ONE APPOINTED BY THE ACTING COMMISSIONER OF EDUCATION.

HOWEVER, THEY CLAIM THAT THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS VOTE TRANSCENDS THE IMMEDIATE CONTROVERSY INVOLVING MEMBERS OF THE BRIDGEPORT BOARD OF EDUCATION.

“WE ARE OUTRAGED THAT OFFICIALS OF THE CITY OF BRIDGEPORT AND THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT, IN AN ORCHESTRATED COUP, HAVE STOLEN FROM THE PARENTS AND TAXPAYERS OF THIS CITY THE RIGHT TO ELECT THE MEMBERS OF THE BRIDGEPORT BOARD OF EDUCATION,” SAID LYLE HASSAN JONES, ONE OF THE ORGANIZERS OF THE EVENT. “THIS ACT STRIKES AT THE HEART OF OUR DEMOCRATIC TRADITION, AND THE EXERCISE OF THE PRECIOUS RIGHT TO VOTE BY A FREE PEOPLE,” HE SAID.

AMONG THE ORGANIZATIONS SPONSORING THE RALLY ARE CITIZENS’ REVIEW ADVISORY COMMITTEE, THE DOMINICAN AMERICAN COALITION, AND SAVE OUR BABIES, INC.

THOSE ORGANIZING THE EVENT EMPHASIZED THE RALLY IS NOT BEING STAGED IN SUPPORT OF ANY MAYORAL CANDIDATE AND THAT ALL ARE WELCOMED TO ATTEND THE NON-PARTISAN AFFAIR.

“THE ISSUE FACING OUR CITY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN PERSONALITIES, PARTISAN POLITICS, OR THE AMBITIONS OF ANY CANDIDATE FOR POLITICAL OFFICE,” SAID RETIRED SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE, CARMEN L. LOPEZ. “THE FUNDAMENTAL QUESTION IS WHETHER THE PEOPLE OF BRIDGEPORT WILL PUBLICLY ASSERT THEIR RIGHT TO SELF-GOVERNMENT, OR WHETHER THEY WILL PASSIVELY ALLOW THAT RIGHT TO BE RIPPED FROM THEM, IN THE BEST TRADITION OF A BANANA REPUBLIC,” LOPEZ DECLARED.

“WHAT HAS OCCURRED SINCE JULY 1 MUST CONCERN EVERY CITIZEN AND EVERY TAXPAYER IN THE CITY OF BRIDGEPORT WHETHER OR NOT THEY ARE PARENTS OF PUBLIC SCHOOL CHILDREN,” SAID HASSAN-JONES. “NONE OF US CAN BE SPECTATORS BECAUSE DEMOCRACY IS NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT. THIS ABDICATION OF RESPONSIBILITY BY PUBLIC OFFICIALS AND ATTACK ON THE HEART OF THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS CANNOT BE PERMITTED TO STAND,” HE CONCLUDED.

  1. Jeff,
Thanks for the heads up, this is an important meeting for all of our sakes. This decision may be overturned in court. Should the candidates offer a slate of candidates for the BOE seats? There are many questions and too few answers. We must hold their feet to the fire to get any answers we need.

      1. I have to wonder what exactly Lyle Hassan Jones, Judge Lopez, et al. hope to accomplish. This is pretty much a done deal. The acting Commissioner of Education has the students’ best interests in mind. The BOE has been politicized for too long and the education of the city’s children has suffered to the point a relative handful of high school students actually graduate with the minimal skills needed to get and keep a job. The votes were always lopsided. Is the democratic process really being hijacked? It would appear Bill Finch did an end run around due process, but that’s not surprising. That’s the standard operating procedure for this mayoral administration. It is time to send John Ramos packing, time to cash him out. Several Bridgeport school teachers number among my closest friends. One took a job in another town rather than continue working for a dysfunctional public education system. Arguing about the democratic process while the quality of education sucks is the same as not doing anything about it.

I’m reminded of the IRA hunger strikes of 1981. Men were literally starving to death while elected officials and the Archdiocese of Northern Ireland argued about whose fault it was.

  2. Bpt needs BEACON2 on the BOE. Dedicated man he is; he has my support. Call him John Marshall Lee. If there is someone who could sort out this mess, it would be him.

  3. No ties??? Then what in the hell is he running for? We need every vote we can get to unseat Mario Testa and Paul Timpanelli. Dilution of primary votes will ensure we have 4 more years of these bastards.

  5. There is no way MJF can beat John Gomes, he has the street vote, the Black vote, the Hispanic vote and the school moms just to name a few. MJF has the Fairfield vote and maybe, just maybe the Black Rock vote. MJF you’re in trouble, and I think you already peaked!

  6. MJF is a consensus builder. She knows how to compromise and negotiate. She’s been inching up in the polls, only a few percentage points behind OTB and way out in front of Gomes. The endorsements from Edwin Gomes and Marilyn Moore are sure to bring a few more votes to the table.

Bill Finch, on the other hand, has exposed his flanks. He is vulnerable on the dissolution of the BOE without consulting the parents. Many of the attorneys and law firms doing legal work for the city have contributed to his re-election campaign, and that has the appearance of impropriety. And in politics as well as the legal profession the mere appearance of impropriety can often do more damage than an actual impropriety. (Case in point: Stan Strickland, the first judge to hear the Casey Anthony case, was forced to recuse himself because of a personal relationship with a local news blogger in Orlando. The judge hearing one of the civil cases brought against Ms. Anthony recused himself for reasons that have not been disclosed.)

  7. *** Regardless of political party, the BOE was a failure going nowhere fast. Change isn’t always welcomed but sometimes “needed;” give change a chance! There’s plenty of blame to go round, no? *** CHANGE ***
