Colliding Civics – When International Affairs Become Local

It’s not often the public speaking portion of City Council meetings takes center stage for an extended period of time, attracting hundreds of spectators to a packed council chambers. If you believe all politics is local the Middle East ceasefire resolution has galvanized various partisans for months and Monday’s meeting will do the same as 9 of 10 speakers will address the issue at hand including Anthony Bennett, pastor of Mount Aery Baptists Church, a leading figure in the faith community.

  1. Lennie, while Port’s Middle East ceasefire resolution has galvanized various partisans, in reality, it is as meaningless as the paper it is written on in terms of its effectiveness and authority to have any meaning.

What gives to these various partisans colliding forces? I am sure the issues run deep and the Por CC knows its resolution is meaningless. So the question has to be asked. Is the Port’s CC instigating the various partisan groups in a conflict of their own?

That being said, galvanized without a doubt, but do me a favor, please keep God out of your partisan. Keep it personal in nature. Considering Y’all are cut from the same cloth and pray to the same God, The God of Abraham.

Unless you are like JZ, cut for a different cloth. POP

    1. If JML gives it a break, Ten (10) of Ten (10) speakers would be addressing the issue.

The question is what are they waiting for to hit the road to Washington DC?

  2. Perhaps 10 out of 10 Speedy, but to be fair to John he’s the only one on point with CC authority and responsibilities.

This resolution is a manufactured issue, be it a real-world/Middle East issue that has been going on for thousands of years. As for the speakers. The resolution is meaningless in terms of authority to address the conflict. So no real point for any speaker to address something meaningless.

As for the history of Palestine, Everyone will have their perspective, without a doubt along with their dietary requirements. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZMvfoqrhWw

As for the loss of financial support because of this manufacturer’s meanless resolution, it needs to look inward to King Solomon. Because if those who supported them in the past are pulling their support because of this meanless resolution, I don’t know, seems like cutting the baby in half to me.

At any rate, play nice people..

  3. Who does not enjoy seeing folks with human concerns showing up at one of our two City Halls, to support peace, stop the violence, replace hatred with active listening and perhaps a better understanding of the multiple sides of threats to living in the Middle East?? What other institution in our community has provided such an opportunity to members of diverse groups where we live to provide a civil voice to their feelings and beliefs? And those who wish to avoid addressing “hatred or violence” as represented by religious, racial, or other cultural identity differences, comment that it is not a subject for the Council to tackle as they have no such authority.
But where do we go to address our weak record of democratic VOTING in the CITY at election time? Who can have an effect on the party that represents most Council members, most of the time? When HOUSING issues are raised, what do questions to the Council about FAIR RENT and/or FAIR HOUSING groups bring forth? Perhaps they know about these issues, but what is their role in providing action items that change the status quo? Who will suggest contacting a legally trained professional, with a previous career with a Federal agency, hired by the current administration eight years ago to be the “go to” resource for ACCOUNTABILITY and INTEGRITY in Bridgeport? Do you remember his name? Listen to the “voices” of our community, please. Too many have already accepted a role as “voiceless”. Who will model respectful discussions, that provide a diverse audience, inclusion in the regular process? Isn’t that a sign of health? And it did not take more than $1 Million contributed to candidates for office. Patience. Time will tell.
