Police Chief Roderick Porter and other city officials spoke about Tyre Nichols like he was one of their own Friday, hosting a vigil for the Memphis man who died after being beaten by police following a traffic stop last month.
“If his family can hear us in Bridgeport, or they can be touched by what we’re doing here today, I hope that brings them a level of comfort,” Porter said.
Porter and various city and state officials, including Mayor Joe Ganim spoke at the vigil, criticizing the actions of Memphis police, who were recorded beating Nichols after a traffic stop. Nichols would later die of his injuries, setting off nationwide protests.
City officials were joined by state representatives Herron Gaston and Fred Gee, who said they’re taking action to lessen the chances of something similar occurring within the state.
“Being a newly elected official, Dr. Gaston and myself, have presented some legislation to the Public Safety Committee that’s going to help to alleviate some of the communication issues between police and motorists. This legislation is going to be huge for our community,” Gee said.
The legislation according to Gaston, would require police officers to tell motorists why they are being stopped during a traffic stop, unless doing so would jeopardize the safety of an officer or motorist.

Out of 60 or so people who attended, more than 50% were police. Out of the reminding 50%, 40% were either city hall employees or in some professional capacity. Not one BLM sign or the sign of its presence. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were fewer black people there outside of an official capacity than the total number of police officers in evolved into the beating death of Tyre Nichols.
John, this is why I am critical/apprehensive of CRT. It’s somewhat anti-American/capitalist/right for power. It uses racial identity politics for votes driven by emotional racism, particularly for the black vote or anti-white, to gain political power, on a Level.
While Black Lives Matter, Black Votes Matter more. Diversity, equity, and inclusion may be socialist/left’s framework for power, racism, or race motivation, in the anti-white race card is the card of choice. LOCIALLY speaking.
Can you imagine if those police officers who dragged Tyre out of his car and beat him to death were white? Imagine the outcry and national black rage had the officers involved been white. Here we see a total reverse of the norm. Cities/police, Port included, can have a hard/challenging time keeping beefs between various sections of towns from getting out of hand, which constitutes gunplay and death regardless of race.
