From Board of Education Chair John Weldon:
On Monday, March 25th, the Board of Education dedicated its regular meeting night to a session focused solely on student and staff achievement. In keeping with newly established policy designed to give school, student and staff recognitions their own dedicated spotlight, so they aren’t overshadowed by anything else, the BOE held the first such spotlight on student performances, as well as school, student and staff achievement.
Hosted at Cesar Batalla School, the event was attended by over 300 students, parents and staff and was a testament to the great things that happen every day in Bridgeport Public Schools. The event was kicked off by a rousing performance by the Roosevelt School Drumline, followed by reports from Student Representatives to the Board. Recognitions of various student and staff achievements over the last quarter were given over the course of the evening, interspersed with moving performances by the Batalla School Modern Band and the Harding High School Choir.
A highlight of the evening included a recognition of Janelle Newell, the Multicultural Magnet seventh-grader who recently won the statewide spelling bee and will now go on to the Nationals, who we’re all very proud of. It was a welcome focus on the people the Board is here to serve and I think all that were present enjoyed the positivity of the evening. My sincerest thanks go out to all the staff’s hard work in pulling the evening together and my heartiest congratulations go to all that were recognized.
