Young Jeremy Rosa’s Food Drive

Mayor Finch with Jeremy Rosa at last year’s food drive.

From Mayor Bill Finch:

In 2012, Bridgeport resident Jeremy Rosa at the age of seven decided to host his very own food drive. With support from family, friends and neighbors in the community Jeremy collected a total of 997 pounds of food in 2012. In recognition of his efforts, Mayor Bill Finch, City Council President Tom McCarthy and the entire City Council presented Jeremy with a Proclamation. In 2013, Jeremy’s second annual food drive collected over 3,000 pounds of food to donate to the Connecticut Food Bank. On the eve of his third annual food drive, which will be held roday (Saturday) at Blackham School (425 Thorme Street) from 12 to 3 p.m., Mayor Finch released the following statement:

“I’m incredibly proud of the efforts of Jeremy Rosa, a young person from Bridgeport who is working hard to improve the lives of those who are less fortunate. His food drive continues to grow thanks in large part to the generosity of our Bridgeport residents who come together to support Jeremy’s mission. I encourage everyone who is able to make a donation, whether it be large or small, to help provide nutritious food to people in need.”

Jeremy’s grandfather shares thoughts with OIB:

My name Is Angel Acevedo,  Jeremy’s Grandfather. We are all proud of Jeremy. To know how important it is to him and how much he puts into it, I hope that it is a start for him to work for the people. I feel that instead of knocking what the mayor is doing, people show be glad that the Mayor is giving a boost to Jeremy’s  efforts regardless of what the Mayors is doing for the city. And if you have a problem with the Mayor then keep it with the Mayor and not involve  the kids of tomorrow. Please remember that when a comment is made to the public, that means everyone  can read it young or old, it can become disturbing to younger people when they truly may not understand it. I do understand this person’s point, but when it comes to the children just think about it, find something else to make a point with.

  1. Lennie, nice gesture giving the kid a plug, but why are you participating in the Finch daily image campaign? This is beyond power of incumbency. It is blatant self-promotion. Hope you accommodate challengers with equal time. (I’m sure you will.)

I wonder if McCarthy is arranging a contribution from city funds.

    1. Tom, great point. What challengers? There are no challengers. No one is saying anything. Why are the would-be challengers afraid? I’m not going to deny the kid because the mayor issues a release on this. But you are always free, as you do, to call me on it when you think I’m driveling for the mayor. That’s one of the reasons OIB exists.

      1. Tom White, the Mayor did not have to send out a press release and the council did not have to give this young boy a proclamation. Jeremy Rosa is a hero. His family and friends must be beaming with pride. 4000 lbs. of food to date. The people who will be touched by the young boy’s efforts we will never know, but their lives will be just a little brighter. Thank G-d we have a Mayor who acknowledges a young boy’s efforts. A young boy who obviously will grow up to be a great leader and role model. How dare Lennie or the Mayor acknowledge a great human being? How sad it gets turned into an anti-Finch moment. Lennie is right, there are no challengers yet, but one thing is certain, there will not be a challenger of substance emerging from the Republican party.

  2. I just had the pleasure of meeting Jeremy and his mom Christina. Tammy Boyle, District PAC President and I just went by to meet this inspirational child and drop off a few donations.

Both he and his mom were so humble and appreciative. The last two years she has been storing the donations in her living room, however this year the CT Food Pantry is providing a truck for all the donations collected by Jeremy.

I hope every single person reading OIB can make it to the food drive by 3:00 PM and help Jeremy fill that truck.
