Time To Get Out The Vote For Mayoral Primary

Tuesday’s Democratic mayoral primary renew looks like a raw day with temps around 32 degrees when polls open 6 a.m. and light rain in the afternoon reaching upper 30s.

In such uncharted waters – a vote at the peak of winter – what could the turnout be? In the first primary roughly 6,000 Dem electors made their way to the polls with another 2,000 voting absentee, a historically anemic turnout, among 40,000 eligible Democrats.

Absentees ballots, once again, could be a major factor. As of Monday afternoon the Town Clerk’s Office had received about 1,700 absentees, a number than will likely surpass 1,800 with the final count.

Absentee ballots in September started this controversy and also serves as the coda of the redo, with allegations that 22 supporters of John Gomes received allocations of absentee ballot applications without first registering with the Town Clerk’s Office as required by state statute and election monitors. How that plays out is unclear but this could very well end up in court again depending on the outcome with another general election scheduled for next month.
