Line slashing and white out to cover up names of illegal absentee ballot application circulators by operatives for mayoral candidate John Gomes complements the formal complaint made by Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas (SOTS) to the State Elections Enforcement Commission (SEEC) related to Tuesday’s Democratic primary redo for mayor.
In addition, Gomes backer Denise Solano, who logged out 1,400 applications admitted in a letter to Town Clerk Charlie Stallworth a few days ago that she provided hundreds of applications to Gomes backers for distribution, against election law, what she termed a miscommunication despite election monitors alerting weeks prior that anyone circulating five or more absentee ballots must be registered with the Town Clerk, otherwise this could lead to disqualification of absentee ballot applications.
From SOTS:
If the Circulator on file with the Town Clerk’s Office asks another individual to help with distributing applications, the name of the additional MUST be registered with the Town Clerk’s Office PRIOR to any applications being distributed to voters.
That did not occur.
The improper application hand off to at least 22 Gomes supporters as well as an image of former top cop Rebeca Garcia, featured on Gomes Facebook page with a stack of applications at a senior citizen event, is also part of the record in the SOTS complaint to election watchdog SEEC.
This is a peculiar plot twist in this crazy election cycle with a court-ordered primary do over because of absentee ballot stuffing into drop boxes that trumpeted sanctimonious cries from the Gomes campaign.
On December 29th Gabe Rosenberg, Chief of Staff to the Secretary of State, emailed to both the Ganim and Gomes campaigns warning that flouting strict compliance with this statute would lead to “disqualification” of absentee ballot applications.
It has been past practice in Bridgeport for dozens of campaign operatives to ignore the state statute, but this is particularly news worthy after the state and election monitors made clear that the statute must be enforced.
When team Gomes realized the gaffe, white out and line slashing were used replaced by Solano’s name.

From their perspective, there was strong evidence of fraud being committed by circulators who realized that they were circulating Ms. Solano’s applications in violation of law.”

Quick question when were the changes made on this document, before or after they were submitted on the 5th of Jan? Someone in Gomes camp before submission or someone in the town clerk’s office, after the fact?
Let’s assume it was afterwards and this is not a change copy by Gomes camp, but the actual submission to the town clerk’s office. Who change the name in the Town Clerk’s office and when?
Let’s assume it was changed by the Gomes camp before they submitted on to the 5th. At that point, the camp became aware of their mistake, by their own admission. Did they correct it and inform their operatives that ABa is not Crack Cocaine or Dope and they can just go to City Hall can pick up their ABs for distribution without fear of arrest or did they continue to distribute them to their operatives.?
Based on the time stamp on the 5th of Jan just a few days into the access and distribution of ABs, plenty of time to correct the issue and have their operative go down to City Hall and sign out their ABs to sling, if the name correction was made before submission.
However, based on The Press 🙂 the image of Garcia’s photo op on Gomes’s Facebook page was after the Jan 5 drop in the photo above they continued with improper circulation ABs. Since G2’s camp wants all of the names of any improper ballots to not be counted taken out by Solano it can be assumed it is Gomes’s entire ballot harvesting operation. or at least those on this list.
Based on the letter sent to the town clerk’s office by Gomes camp to notify them of their “plan” they say the Town Clerks signed off on so no need to change the name on the sheet. Base on that logic no need for anyone on the town clerk’s office to make the change.
“Gomes and supporter Denise Solano confirmed Friday that she had indeed checked out 1,400 absentee ballot applications and provided them to other campaign workers, but insisted the town clerk signed off on the Gomes campaign’s plan. “Our campaign has been very transparent and open from the onset,” Gomes said on Friday.
Gomes said staff within the town clerk’s office told his campaign it was okay. “So we moved forward with it,” Gomes said.”
Based on this statement and the time stamp. A) someone in the town clerks office changes the name when Lennie breaks the story and they are back peddling or Gomes camp changes the name before submitting them. Which makes more sense. if the latter, well. it would appear they, Gomes’ camp knew something was off before the 5th yet continued in the freak show called Port Politics instead of telling their operative to go get your ABs at city hall. It’s not crack cocaine. 🙂

As my story notes accurately, election monitors and the Secretary of State notified both campaign camps of the AB application rules in December. The Gomes camp doctored the paperwork after realizing they had screwed up. “Transparent” is just a convenient word Gomes throws out but he doesn’t practice what he preaches on so many levels. As for that dubious letter it was lawyered up to falsely project the blame on someone else for Gomes screw up.

Lennie, Did you notice that Republican City Sheriff and long time RTC Sergeant at Arms Mike Moretti is listed as a Gomes AB volunteer? Is the RTC supporting the Gomes campaign.
