From Dan Haar, CT Insider:
With barely more than two weeks to go before the election for governor, and early voting now underway, Gov. Ned Lamont has opened so wide a lead over state Sen. Ryan Fazio, according to a new Sacred Heart/WFSB/CT Insider poll, that we need to step back and ask a hard question.
Given the conditions in place right now, could any Republican – in all of U.S. history – stop Lamont from winning a third term?
Our poll of 1,000 registered registered Connecticut voters, conducted online between Oct. 6 and 12, showed Lamont with a lead of 53% to 31% over Fazio. People who said they were likely voters favored Lamont by 59% to 33%, a perplexing margin of 26 percentage points.
That’s up from margins of 22 points and 17 points for Lamont, respectively, among likely voters in our two prior Sacred Heart University/WFSB/CT Insider polls of this cycle, conducted in late July and early September. The poll, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, also reverses gains Fazio made against Lamont among all voters in the September poll.
Why is this final poll in our series perplexing? Fazio, 36, is by most accounts a mainstream Republican with wide support within the party. He’s running a very good campaign – a mix of policy, attacks on Lamont and lighthearted stuff. He’s even-keeled, with five years in the state Senate; he’s hitting on all the biggest issues with near-daily rollouts.
