The Bridgeport Police Department’s internal affairs division is investigating an incident captured on video and widely shared on social media that appears to show an officer force a man to the ground during an arrest.
Public information officer Shawnna White said the department was alerted early Wednesday morning to the 14-second video that was posted to Facebook the evening before. As of Thursday, it had more than 100,000 views.
The video, which Bridgeport resident Shayna Michelle Watford said she took while she and her sister were driving by,shows three officers standing alongside the hood of a city police car. As Watford’s sister drives closer to the scene and Watford continues to record, one of the officers forcefully swings a man to the ground. The man appears to hit the pavement with one arm behind his back.
She said the officers were at the intersection because McDaniel was obstructing traffic and panhandling. Asked whether they would be on modified duty during the internal investigation, White said the officers were not as of Thursday.
