Interim Health Director Named

According to multiple sources, Patrice Sulik, the director of the Trumbull/Monroe Health District, has been named the interim Bridgeport health director in place of Kristin duBay Horton who’s on a medical leave from the department. The city contacted officials with the state health department to identify an acting director.

    1. Chosen, I don’t think you’re missing anything. The interim health director will be keeping her job in the ‘burbs and plus be paid as the Bridgeport health director. This was done to satisfy the state statute governing health depts. This is another step towards disbanding the entire health dept. Anyone who doesn’t believe that is a fool.

  1. Is this some kinda misprint? How can the director of the Trumbull/Monroe health district also be the interim Bridgeport health director? This is double-dipping in a whole new sense of the word. I presume we are paying Ms. Sulik in addition to her other full-time pay. Who thinks up these things? Why isn’t Kristin Horton allowed to speak to her staff? Yes OIB bloggers, the woman is under a gag order not to speak to her staff under threat of termination. WTF is going on in that dept?

  2. Is there more than one lesson to be drawn from this latest “wizard move” for Bridgeport? I understand a “Health Director” by the nature of the job title, is probably going to have some specific educational, degree training, and/or experience requirements to hold the job and exercise its responsibilities. When OIB contributors indicated Alanna Kabel was likely to take over, I kept quiet because, I thought, not likely.
So certain top-level duties and responsibilities have probably been assigned to her (that take a minimal amount of time that will not eat into her regular duties perhaps) and she probably has the approval of her full-time employer anyway.
And it is more than likely under the above pattern she will not be receiving the equivalent of a Bridgeport Health Director compensation. So under those circumstances it wouldn’t be “double dipping” I conclude.
Maybe it could set a precedent for some of the less-than-full-time positions that were created in the past, where in recent years one person has been assigned responsibilities and duties for two directorships (and the world doesn’t fall apart). In flush times no one worries about whether there is enough work to justify a full-time position. When pressure comes on, cutting and reforming happens.
Just think: perhaps we could share regional Directors of Economic Development; Finance Directors; Police, Fire and Emergency Service chiefs; Blight supervisors (Bridgeport experiences could really open eyes on this one); and you can think of more. Efforts like that might share equipment more broadly and efficiently. (We could share our armored personnel carrier with our neighbors who really need such apparatus. By the way, has anyone seen that APC? Where is it housed? This is the piece of equipment that showed up in the 2010-11 budget with a price tag of $245,000 in the Fire Department budget.)
Just some thoughts. Time will tell.

  3. When are the African American Democrats in this city going to rise up in anger? First Finch fires (refuses to give another contract) to Dr. Evans. He hires a white dude out of New Haven as an interim. Finally he gives in to pressure and hires Ms. Dubay-Horton. Now he is pushing her out the door and is hiring another white interim and has placed a highly compensated deputy, assistant, associate CAO to run the department.
Just for kicks he waits until after the election and Coble has done all of the mayor’s dirty work and fires his ass. He gives Ruben a huge pay raise and doesn’t do anything for Tyrone.
And he wanted to give out 15% pay raises to the upper echelon of his mainly white-male administration.
Come one Doctor Ford … the mayor is mocking you and the other so-called black leaders in this city.

    1. Grin, they get what they deserve. These are the same black “leaders” (and I use that word loosely) who were comparing Mary-Jane Foster to Sara Palin and the KKK, telling people her line was the Republican line. These non-leaders lied to their people to keep the white men in power. Then they sit down with Finch and accept his lying bullshit explanations and the few crumbs that he doles out to them. Reminds me of when he fired Dr. Evans during Black History Month. It’s déjà vu all over again.

  4. *** Part-time interim health director fills the directors line item slot on paper as well as the state requirement and for a whole lot less, no? Plus if the shit hits the fan, you need someone to blame! Also some areas in the city health dept seem headed towards part-time hours or possibly privatized some day in the future! *** African American Dems make a deal with the devil then expect some type of compensation in return, no? *** FORGETABOUTIT ***

  5. Isn’t that what I said when I broke this story on Friday? Now that the election is over and they have FOUR MORE YEARS, there’s no need to deal with those pesky minorities. That Horton woman was too uppity anyway, she didn’t know her place. The medical leave was a convenient way to get her out of the way while Finch resumes his task of dismantling the health dept. Do you think Patrice from Trumbull/Monroe will care? Hell no. She’ll just keep collecting her compensation and get while the getting’s good, just like the rest of them.
