TRUMBULL — The head basketball coach for Bridgeport’s Harding High School was arrested on a felony charge after he allegedly left his 4-year-old son home alone while he went to the gym.
Charles D. Clemons Jr., 40, was charged with risk of injury to a minor after police said his son was found by neighbors wandering the street in his pajamas complaining that his house was on fire.
“We heard a house alarm going off for about five to 10 minutes, a little boy was there very agitated and saying his house was on fire,” police said a neighbor told them. “He had what appeared to be pajamas on and one sock and one barefoot.”

I know Don to be a decent man and a decent father. I simply cannot believe this. Hope it all works out for the best.
Gee Bob Walsh, it is these kinds of decent men who forget their kids in the back seat of a car during 100 degree temps. Nice to be kissing Clemons’ ass but this is one post where you should have just kept quiet. A four-year-old home alone and wandering the street will not earn him father of the year. Maybe it will. Very sad. Good he didn’t get kidnapped, fell in a pool, ate poison; you know, the little things that happen to four-year-olds. This is too weird for words. Baby sitter, day care, a neighbor, bring him to the gym, drop him off at grandparents, etc. You know, what most fathers do to make sure no harm comes to their child. This is very disturbing.
Bob Walsh, I agree with you, and Steve Auerbach you make some good points. I’m sure there is more to this story than what is here. I pray for the best for this family.
Ron Mackey, I am not a vindictive, mean-spirited person. I also wish the best for his family. What could be more to this story. Father goes to gym. Leaves four-year-old alone. Four-year-old walking street with one sock and one shoe. Just out of curiosity, what more could there be to this story? Alien abduction. OMG–it is entirely possible he didn’t know the child was in the house. Maybe assumed his partner had the child. That could be a sad but true reality. Who is gonna admit to this as an alibi for Clemons?
Steven Auerbach, I’ve been in organizations like high school sport teams, in the Air Force and a firefighter and as team players you understand there will be times when you will have to take a hit or the blame for something you had nothing to do with in order to protect the team.
Right Mackey, and your point is? His wife or lover should take the blame to protect him? That is some house Clemons has in Trumbull. A babysitter would break the bank. Meanwhile he was charged. Very sad. Maybe you want to take one for “the team?”
I think this situation could be summed up by just saying he’s guilty of bad parenting. That poor frightened child could have been hit by a car wandering around outside. Thank G-d for the neighbors and shame on Mr. Clemons Jr. There are no mitigating circumstances in this matter.
