It’s not only crunch time for the mayoral candidates spreading across the city to galvanize turnout for the September 12 Democratic primary, it’s also fundraising and planning time for the local town committee churning out support for its endorsed slate of candidates.
Thursday night Democratic Town Committee leadership, led by Town Chair Mario Testa, hosted a fundraiser at Circiolo Sportivo on Park Avenue to fuel a primary-day, get-out-the-vote operation.
U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal and Democratic Party State Director Nancy DiNardo were among Connecticut political officials in attendance.
Mayor Joe Ganim and the other endorsed Democrats won’t be the only candidates backed by additional spending.
The political action committee Bridgeport Now, formed by a coalition of John Gomes backers, is trying to influence the outcome of the race in support of Gomes; another is Action Bridgeport Coalition PAC backing Gomes’ slate of candidate.

The most recent July report filed with the State Election Enforcement Commission showed Bridgeport Now had roughly $38,000 on hand in support of or against a candidate.
It appears Gomes’ mayoral committee will expend most of its funds in the final days positive on the candidate while Bridgeport Now serves as the attack dog against Ganim. This could come in the form of direct mail pieces.
In a few days updated candidate finance reports will be filed, per state law. Ganim will be over $400,000 in total and Gomes more than $300,000. The independent expenditures in support of Gomes, however, will bring those respective tallies closer in total spending.
