Early Voting Starts Tuesday As East Side Candidates Await Court Challenge Decision

In this sleepy off-cycle, early voting begins on Tuesday for two City Council Democratic primaries and once again a court challenge could impact one of the races.

A Superior Court judge is weighing a complaint by City Council incumbents Aidee Nieves and Maria Valle charging their 137th District East Side Democratic primary opponents, Ismael Sanchez and Isaac Dickerson, violated state law by submitting fraudulent and forged signature petition sheets to qualify for a September primary.

Another strange set of circumstances, a primary court challenge while voting is underway.

The other council race in the Upper East Side 138th District has a lot on the line. Endorsed Democrats council member Samia Suliman and District Leader Kevin Monks are challenged by council incumbent Maria Pereira and Keyla Medina.

Suliman and Medina are both residents of vote-rich Success Village.

Absentee ballots could decide this one.
