City Awarded $10 Million For Storm Projects

From Mayor Bill Finch:

This week, HUD announced that it is awarding Bridgeport $10 million in federal funds as part of Rebuild by Design, which is a multi-stage regional competition to promote resiliency in the Sandy-affected region (For more information, click here and here).

In response, Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch made the following statement:
“This grant will help us invest in the future, allowing us to continue being a leader in coastal resiliency and sustainability while making waterfront living safer for residents.

“This is great news for our city. We put forth a vision to make Bridgeport a city where in order to mitigate climate change, we’re creating green jobs while investing in the future to make our city a more resilient place for our kids and grandkids to live, work, and raise a family. These much needed funds will help us to continue doing just that. I want to thank Congressman Himes, Senator Blumenthal, Senator Murphy, President Obama, Shaun Donovan and others at HUD for their confidence in the Park City.”

  1. Who decides how that money gets spent? Do the feds oversee the spending? I’m hoping Finch is not left to dole out these funds/projects by himself without anyone keeping watch. I can imagine his friends and supporters lining up now for their share.

  2. “recovery and resiliency efforts” … “innovative resiliency projects” … “recovery and mitigation funding” … “critical funding to help Bridgeport rebuild and recover.” Enough vagueness here to spread monies around to favored contractors?

  3. Don’t forget the new cars. In the past, when an EOC, preparedness or recovery grant came through, the big shots got new state-of-the-art SUVs. And remember the Mayor’s pledge there’d be no more take-home cars? Big fat lie. Most of PF is taking their cars home again to Monroe, Shelton or wherever they live. Thank you, Bridgeport taxpayers.

Wingnut is correct about Tiago’s and also Vazzy’s. Here’s how it works: The City places an order for something legitimate (an actual event), then the restaurant overcharges, leaving the City with a credit Finch and others can use as their personal meal ticket. This is another one of Sherwood’s creative accounting practices. They’re not the only ones. Fabrizi never paid for a meal either.

  4. city hall smoker, thanks for the information. I had been told about this group charging their drinks and what not on a tab. I just did not know how they got paid. Now I know. So Tiago got a job out of it and now maybe Vazzano can open up the place he wanted on Huntington Tpk. And the Feds sleep on.
