The founder of Capital Prep Harbor School, located Downtown, and the Connecticut Department of Education, are coming under fire by state auditors for lack of enrollment oversight at the Hartford school that served as the Bridgeport model.
Steve Perry is among the so-called education reformers who have established charters schools in the city that run independently of traditional public school districts.

Steve Perry, who has branded himself as “America’s Most Trusted Educator,” was the principal during the audited years. He left in 2015 to open a charter school in Bridgeport and another in New York City with rapper Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs.

CHS lost five star basketball players to Capital Prep. Harbor Charter School in just its first year.
WHen I was canvassing last year, i ran into a student who was a freshman at CHS but was playing varsity. A coach from Capital Prep Charter $chool recruited him which is completely illegal. He never participated or applied for the lottery but got right in.
I also have spoken with two parents who went as far as to drive to Hartford to get his school funded. Both expressed complete dissatisfaction with the school, and one had already withdrawn her child.
One described him as a “snake oil salesman”.
When not able to get his way a couple years ago he was quoted as saying “The only way to lose a fight is to stop fighting. All this did was piss me off. It’s so on. Strap up, there will be head injuries.” Yeah, that’s the type of educator/leader we need.
