Despite loud protestations from most City Council members demanding mandatory parking for housing units, the Zoning Commission by a 5-4 last week rejected the regulation of parking, citing the need to encourage more housing developments.
CT Post reporter Brian Lockhart has more:
Zoning Commissioner Soledad Nunez cast one of the five “no” votes in favor of keeping residential parking deregulated.
“Bridgeport needs to prioritize affordable housing,” Nunez explained afterward. “We have an affordable housing crisis. Tell me, who can live in a parking space? People need a roof over their head.”
…City Councilwoman Maria Valle has been one of the most vocal advocates for reinstating residential parking rules.
“I am disappointed,” she said following the zoning board vote. “Very disappointed.”
Valle and others were prompted to push to restore on-site parking standards because of a 74-unit apartment complex planned for the lower East Side neighborhood that she represents. That five-story building will be erected on a long-dormant lot, improving the area. But opponents decried the design’s lack of on-site parking and said the surrounding streets’ curbside spaces are already in too high demand.

A DESPERATE MOVE TO GET AFFORDABLE HOUSING. CAN’T BE CATERING TO FAMILIES COMING IN FROM NY WHO ARE USED TO LIVING LIKE ROACHES IN SUCH CROWED AREAS. THIS WILL TURN INTO A DAMN DISASTER. LETS BUILD THIS IN BLACKROCK. OH. NOT A CHANCE.
Jeff, this is where you come in, Good Job Gold Cost. 🙂 Way to depress the value of a neighborhood.
John, L what does the charter say about such events. ?
Last time I checked the Port don’t have a subway system, and what jobs is that bus lines stopping at? There better be a long game with lager development housing without housing adequate parking for transportation needs.
“Bridgeport needs to prioritize affordable housing,” Nunez explained afterward. “We have an affordable housing crisis. Tell me, who can live in a parking space? People need a roof over their head.”
Really, the Port don’t have a Homeless crisis per se, the housing crise is the affordability that is eaten up more of their workable income. This project is taking advantage of the “affordable Crisis, 74 units on of a plot of land that size, please!
A project development can provide have a retail/shops space and adequate parking behind on the street level and multiple levels of housing.
IDK Port but based on my recent corruptness that came out of City Hall. You are going to be cut in half, going to be thrown you out with the bath water. JS

P.S Beijing the Port still waiting on those Pandas. 🙂
Not that long ago, Congressman Christopher Shays had a new, multi-family (Wayne Street, near Madison Avenue) building condemned and torn down (or, at least he lobbied strongly for such) because it was wedged between two other buildings and had no parking and hardly adequate space to walk around the building and was seen as detriment to the neighborhood. This building sounds like something similar. Maybe Mayor Ganim, our state delegation, and our federal delegation could move a similar process for this building. The councilman for the area led the neighborhood charge which prevailed upon Shays to move the mountain regarding the former. Who cares enough to lead a charge to get the big guns involved in regard to the latter — Maria Valle?
Jeff, you have to define “big guns” Long term, without any real economic reality/employment a complexes of this size like this and the location seem to be heading down a road of drugs and dilapidations, in its long term goal for the neighborhood. It’s idiotic assume a project like this is to combat the affordability housing crisis the state is facing. Changes are Big Drug money/powers are behind something like this, trash development, I am sure with your Gold Coast/Greenwich, Hartford blessing.

You know the “disingenuous” of this drug game is both sides, on some level, even the P-Diddy game. Prophets gives ways to the moral standard. Both side fend to piece of it were integrity gets lost over the might dollar.
Sometime I don’t know what’s side is worse, “disingenuous” perhaps. I mean wanting to legal drugs as a way of taxation and get the prophets out of the other sides hands to their is mix at best. To insinuate something legal will be less pervasive than something not, seems off, “disingenuous” JS
If that so-called genuine side who controls the public education system really gave a shit they would have mandatory curriculum form the 5th grade to 12th grade on drug health, nutritional health and mental health, Shit even financial education. But you have to love it how they wrap their sins/disingenuousness in the cloak respectability of helping others, protecting/saving lives. JS
John L, perhaps such education would have a more positive effect that you DEI, CRT, and CIVICS education in lives. JS
What say you Tony M
