Will Foster And Gomes Make A Campaign Marriage?

Democratic mayoral candidate Mary-Jane Foster has issued a media alert for a “game-changing” announcement today at 11:30. Representatives of  Foster and John Gomes’ mayoral campaign have had discussions the past several days. Could this be a Gomes endorsement of Foster? From the Foster campaign:

What: Over the last couple of weeks, Foster for Bridgeport has made great strides toward ensuring a victory on Sept. 13th. The Foster team has filed a lawsuit challenging the reconstitution of the Bridgeport Board of Education, Mary-Jane has outlined her vision for education reform, withdrawn petitions for a citywide slate, and filed an ethics complaint with the Bridgeport Ethics Commission and also with the SEEC.

Today, Mary-Jane Foster, Democratic candidate for mayor of Bridgeport, will make a game-changing announcement.

Where: City Hall Annex, 999 Broad Street, Bridgeport.

When: TODAY, MONDAY, Aug. 8, 2011 at 11:30 AM

      To your posting

      Corrupt …
      I hope not. Yours has been a most counterproductive presence … the name change did not disguise your prevailing pattern of discourse on OIB.

      1. I believe you have mistaken me for someone else. I have previously written here under just one other name but that was months ago, nor have I ever engaged in any disrespectful comments that would result in “discourse.” Perhaps an apology?

  1. Finch–this is for you.

    Casey at the Bat
    By Ernest Lawrence Thayer
    Taken From the San Francisco Examiner – June 3, 1888

    The outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Mudville nine that day;
    The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play,
    And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same,
    A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

    A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest
    Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast;
    They thought, “If only Casey could but get a whack at that —
    We’d put up even money now, with Casey at the bat.”

    But Flynn preceded Casey, as did also Jimmy Blake,
    And the former was a hoodoo, while the latter was a cake;
    So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat;
    For there seemed but little chance of Casey getting to the bat.

    But Flynn let drive a single, to the wonderment of all,
    And Blake, the much despised, tore the cover off the ball;
    And when the dust had lifted, and men saw what had occurred,
    There was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn a-hugging third.

    Then from five thousand throats and more there rose a lusty yell;
    It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell;
    It pounded on the mountain and recoiled upon the flat,
    For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat.

    There was ease in Casey’s manner as he stepped into his place;
    There was pride in Casey’s bearing and a smile lit Casey’s face.
    And when, responding to the cheers, he lightly doffed his hat,
    No stranger in the crowd could doubt ’twas Casey at the bat.

    Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt.
    Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt.
    Then while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip,
    Defiance flashed in Casey’s eye, a sneer curled Casey’s lip.

    And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air,
    And Casey stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
    Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped —
    “That ain’t my style,” said Casey. “Strike one!” the umpire said.

    From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar,
    Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore;
    “Kill him! Kill the umpire!” shouted some one on the stand;
    And it’s likely they’d have killed him had not Casey raised his hand.

    With a smile of Christian charity great Casey’s visage shone;
    He stilled the rising tumult; he bade the game go on;
    He signaled to the pitcher, and once more the dun sphere flew;
    But Casey still ignored it, and the umpire said “Strike two!”

    “Fraud!” cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered “Fraud!”
    But one scornful look from Casey and the audience was awed.
    They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,
    And they knew that Casey wouldn’t let that ball go by again.

    The sneer has fled from Casey’s lip, the teeth are clenched in hate;
    He pounds with cruel violence his bat upon the plate.
    And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go,
    And now the air is shattered by the force of Casey’s blow.

    Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright,
    The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
    And somewhere men are laughing, and little children shout;
    But there is no joy in Mudville — mighty Casey has struck out.

  2. Just woke up to the sound of Joe Connolly’s voice giving the opening bell report. Saw the announcement on FB and detoured over here. Guess I’m gonna have to shower, dress and head down there for this.

  4. LENNIE, JUST HEARD A MAJOR ENDORSEMENT IS COMING FROM THE BLACK COMMUNITY THIS WEEK FOR MJF. JOHN TODAY AND THIS PERSON LATER ON THIS WEEK. I HEARD HE WAS WITH HER AT SEVERAL BLACK CHURCHES THIS WEEKEND AND AT MANY COOKOUTS OVER THIS WEEKEND. FINCH IS GOING DOWN BIG TIME!
    Many people at these events said we’ll vote for MJF because of HIM. STAY TUNED, MORE TO COME!

    0
    1. Excellent news, Ernie Newton! The people of the city of Bridgeport are tired of being treated like second-class citizens. Finch voiced his low opinion a few weeks ago. Now we are going to voice our opinion of HIM, at the ballot box on 9/13/11!!!

      0
    2. Well Ernie Newton, I can say that is true because I did see MJF this Sunday at the largest black church in Bridgeport. MJF’s name was not even mentioned in church but she was well received before and after church and she really feels comfortable when she is there.

  5. There goes the ace in the hole for Finch–hoping to split the anti-Finch vote and getting a narrow win in a three-way race.

    Finch’s only hope now is to get nasty–real nasty. Hope MJF has a Kevlar wardrobe … she’s gonna need it!

    0
    1. As sexist as this may sound, Finch needs to be careful about how far he goes in attacking a woman. And again, I know it sounds sexist but the reality is it may turn off voters.

      Gomes deserves mucho kudos. This had to be hard for him. He had the signatures to get on the ballot but when push came to shove he is doing what is in the best interests of the city he loves. I don’t see how Finch beats this combination.

    1. donj and yahooy aka WINNING. When I first read Lennie’s OIB topic and viewed the YouTube video, I was pissed and I felt an urge to ‘cut’ something.
      I grabbed the sharpest sword in my possession and did the unthinkable–I “cut” a $500.00 check to Foster for Mayor 2011. Now my wife thinks I’m crazy and threw away all the pens around the house.

      I wonder how much time and money you two guys have put into the campaigns. For quite a while, I’ve done my best to help you both to become thinkers with good logic. I’ve had it and I’m letting both of you know you’ve been cut off as my OIB sidekicks.

      On a side note, I went to press conference and noticed a familiar face. I walked up to him and said, “Hey, Bridgeport Kid.” He looked at me for a few seconds and asked me, who are you? I responded, “yahooy, why don’t you say all those things to my face?” The Kid, all polite and calm said, “Let’s step over there and I’ll gladly tell you.” With a laugh, I took my shades off and re-introduced myself to The Bridgeport Kid. Nice seeing you again, man!

      1. Did MJF actually hold a conversation with you before she put you on the ticket? I know. You told her you were yahooy.

        You’re worse than Ernest “T” for a propensity to personify stupid.

        We are not in City Hall yet, you idiot. You keep posting this nonsense reflective of your childlike and emotionally challenged persona and people are going to question MJF’s intellect for picking a dilettante like you.

        Somebody tell this jerk what a dilettante is.

        0
      2. Nice to see you again, Joel, another man with the best interests of the people of the city of Bridgeport at heart.

        We are a part of a historic change in the city’s fortunes. Not just watching from the sidelines, we are participating in the democratic process. The system is working exactly as the Founding Fathers intended. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees us many rights. One of them is the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Attorney Michele Mount successfully petitioned the government in Waterbury Superior Court today. On the 13th of September the voters will act on that petition, hopefully in numbers great enough to throw off the yoke of an obsolete political machine that has served only a few at the expense of the common good.

        A little over two years ago I changed my registration status to “unaffiliated” because I did not want to be identified withe the Democratic Party as it is established in Bridgeport. I grew tired of receiving mailings from certain members of the city’s legislative delegation. The flashy postcards extolling a legislator’s virtues alongside an airbrushed photograph of a smiling face do nothing for me. When they come from an individual who is only using the office as a stepping stone toward an appointed position it is offensive.

        Much has been said about Joel Gonzalez’ fitness for the job of City Sheriff. I don’t know the man all that well but I’m a good judge of character. He has the right stuff to do the job. Mary-Jane Foster made a wise choice. Mr. Gonzalez is a man of integrity, honor and dedication. Most if not all the speculation about his fitness is based on distorted information or some personal gripe a blogger may have with him. Much has also been said about Mr. Ayala’s previous convictions for narcotics offenses. That needs to be put to bed. The man received a full pardon, his record has been expunged.

        So give it a rest, put your hypocritical opinions in a jar and bury them in the back yard. Embrace all of the slated candidates, whatever your personal opinions of the individuals may be. Ms. Foster assembled a ticket with thought and care.

        0
      3. Joel–fuck these haters!
        I’ll admit I questioned your sanity about the self-mutilation thing but that took a lot of conviction on your part. Who else here would have the balls to do that–yahooy?

  6. I’M SURPRISED AT MANY OF YOU ON THIS BLOG. I’m glad to see MJF’s TENT is BIG enough to include everyone who wants Bridgeport to change, INCLUDING THOSE WHO HAVE FALLEN SHORT IN THEIR LIVES! MJF BELIEVES EVERYONE COUNTS!

    0
    1. Thank you, Ernie Newton. Bridgeport is a town with more than a few people who made mistakes in their lives. Some have done time in prison for their mistakes. The state of Connecticut considers them rehabilitated and their debt to society paid in full upon release from prison or discharged from probation. It is hypocritical to judge a person by his or her previous deviations from our normative behavior. I have not met one person who has led a sinless and blameless life. It is not a matter of degree, it is a matter of atonement, of doing penance.

  7. TO MR. CORRUPTICUT,
    IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY WE FORGIVE OUR OWN! And if it is Mr. Newton he’ll bring more VOTES! In the 23rd senatorial district than you CAN!
    For MJF!

    0
    1. I also believe in second chances. It’s not Newton’s record I was referring to. My point is it is hard to maintain the “change” and “anti-establishment” mantras when you surround yourself with the same establishment players.

      0
  8. MY POINT is this. These players know how to win and MJF understands her tent must include EVERYONE! You may not like Mr. Newton but he has a great deal of respect and support in his community and people will support MJF just because he asks them to.

    0
    1. Mr. Newton did his time like a man, I’ll give him that. I don’t like him personally, but that is because he hasn’t really admitted to doing anything wrong, never admitted to violating the public’s trust. I do have grudging respect for the man, he is still a political force to be reckoned with in this town. More power to him, as long as he uses that power to benefit the greater good of the people of the city of Bridgeport.

      0
      1. Yeah. Newton paid his debt to society. But he paid it to a society he screwed and stole from. As a member of that society, I wish him well in all of his endeavors so long as those endeavors have nothing to do with the public trust. He forfeited any right to return. He wasn’t wrongly accused. There was no terrible injustice. The man is a thief. It’s like putting a newly recovering alcoholic to work in a gin mill.

  9. It’s official, according to CT Post Twitter.

    connpost Connecticut Post
    John Gomes said in order not to split the “reform” votes he is withdrawing his campaign and supporting Foster

    0
  10. It’s official. This is the greatest thing that has happened in the City of Bridgeport in the past four decades. John Gomes is a brave man. He is an honest man and he is a skilled man. He knows what it will take to flush the detritus from this city and made a difficult decision. A sacrifice.

    I am going to assume he made this decision because it is the right thing to do. Now it is up to MJF to incorporate John and his followers into her campaign.

    This is the first time since I was a teenager I have been comfortable with the political prospects in this town.

    MJF and Gomes in office means we all win. Godspeed, both of you.

    0
    1. yahooy, you are contradicting yourself, you illogical fool. If Mary-Jane Foster made a mistake in accepting me on her ticket (this is only an assumption on your part)., will you also argue John Gomes made a mistake in supporting a ticket with me on it? I’m just saying!

      0
  11. Corrupticut, you said, An endorsement from Ernie Newton might possibly be even less beneficial to MJF than having Tito and Joel on her ticket!

    I’m sure Mayor Finch would love to get Ernie Newton’s endorsement; in fact I’m sure the mayor would love Joe Ganim’s endorsement. Love them or hate them they did the crime and did their time. If they make an endorsement it will be a game changer.

    0
    1. Ron makes a good point. “…J oe Ganim’s endorsement …” Unless Joe Ganim shows up at the ROV with 3000 petition signatures by 4 p.m. Wednesday night, Joe won’t be in this one. Paging Lennie Grimaldi. Would Joe have to have the petition in by Wednesday for an ‘Independent’ run?

      Will the Town Committee (Mario) recognize and support Foster in the event she beats Finch? Mario supports Finch, does this mean Joe Ganim supports Finch? A Joe Ganim public endorsement of Bill Finch could prove to be a big mistake by Joe.

      0
      1. “WHEN” MJF beats Finch in this primary she would not need the support from the machine. Rick Torres will get mauled worse than Fritz Mondale. The rusty machine will finally go to the scrap yard.

        0
  12. The Bridgeport Democratic Town Committee has achieved past electoral successes by aggressively marketing their candidates on election day. Giving rides to the polling places is not uncommon, and it is not peculiar to Bridgeport. The people most susceptible to persuasion are rounded up and more or less told who to vote for, and more often than not they do as they’re told. In some DTC precincts this demographic is composed of the alcoholics and drug addicts who haunt the street corners, the blue-rinsed matrons who have to take the bus to the supermarket.

    But the tide is turning against that sort of cynical politicking. Ernie Newton has the forgiveness of his former state senate district, a formidable bloc of votes. Mr. Newton has been a little hesitant to publicly atone for his sins. Everyone deserves a fresh start, and Moses will direct “his” people to vote for Mary-Jane Foster come 9/13/11 because it is in everyone’s best interest.

    0
      1. Mr. Newton has posted on OIB about his political clout. From my perspective it appeared to be more bluster and ego and breast-beating than anything else. “Moses” ought to remember that holding public office is not about self, it’s about working toward the greater good for ALL of the people, not just the registered voters in a particular district.

        0
        1. I think you will see something different this election. Remember, those registered voters in a particular district like and support Mr. Newton and I’m sure all of the candidates would want those voters to vote for them. Like him or hate him, Mr. Newton brings something to the table.

          0
  13. When Bill Finch came into the 2007 race for mayor, he already knew the City of Bridgeport was in a dire financial mess. Today, Finch knows Bridgeport is in a much deeper ($1.4 billion) financial mess and to make matters worse, he now has a huge Go mess.
    Imposter vs. Foster, all in all, a good day!
