Watch: Bulk Trash Pickup In Action

Dormant for decades, bulk trash pickup is back. Mayor Joe Ganim on Monday, with Public Facilities officials, highlighted the renewed city service that essentially allows removal of garage/basement household items, sans hazardous waste, for curbside pickup.

As cities go this is a commodity for taxpayers who’d normally pony up extra loot to have hoarded stuff carted away. Most suburban communities don’t provide this service because they lack municipally paid sanitation crews.

The service is by appointment only calling 203-576-3950.

Why by appointment? It’s a nightmare for public works to keep pace when all neighborhoods curbside all the waste at once. In that case no good deed goes unpunished. Streets will be full of debris.

So, albeit good intentions, this is a risky undertaking by the Ganim administration in an election year.

If it goes well pats on the back, if not–kick in the can.

Supporters argue the service also diminishes neighborhood dumping.

  1. Lennie,
You are presenting us regularly with audio/video presentations with the heading, “Joe Ganim was live.” Likely accurate, so no quibble but why the statement? You are not likely to post a heading at any time stating that Joe Ganim was not alive, are you?
Praise for the pickup initiative throughout the City. And a reservation procedure can be orderly and less unsightly at the curb. However, is a number given out, like at a deli, so that you know where and when the service will be delivered. Apparently there are requests of City Hall that have been initially made that receive assurances, but then nothing more is heard.
Such a comment was rendered under publib speaking last evening. Disturbing and unsafe neighborhood conditions in Ernie Newton’s district where only one Council person represents all constituents currently, back in December. Situation continues even with Ernie’s actions.
Perhaps the Mayor’s office needs a representative to listen to public speaking, or even Mayor Ganim might attend and sit in the audience for 30 minutes or less? Are issues heard and acted upon? In an election year? Time will tell.

    1. JML, “Joe Ganim was live” declaration isn’t from me, that’s a Facebook fixture. I know a few people I’d consider the living-dead, but I’m not sure I can specifically state hizzoner has achieved such a designation.
