Mayor Joe Ganim and the Bridgeport Department of Public Facilities today are reminding residents of the Christmas tree pickup guidelines and encouraging residents to support the City’s recycling efforts. Every year, the trees that are collected are brought to the City landfill to be repurposed as mulch for the 48 parks and city-owned buildings throughout Bridgeport. To aid the city’s recycling efforts, residents are required to place trees curbside by 6:00 a.m. on Recycling Day which occurs biweekly. Christmas tree collection will begin on January 9, 2017 and continue until February 3, 2017. The City of Bridgeport is asking residents not to place Christmas trees curbside before January 9, 2017 to avoid safety hazards.
In the past year, the City has collected over 1,673 tons of leaves and grass clippings that will be turned into compost and over 50 tons of tree limbs, brush, stumps and Christmas trees that will be turned into mulch. This recycling process saves Bridgeport taxpayers an estimated cost of more than $150,000 which is broken down into $121,000 savings in disposal costs for leaves and shrubbery and additional $31,000 saved in lieu of purchasing compost and mulch for city parks.
2017 CHRISTMAS TREE PICKUP GUIDELINES
1. Tree collection will begin January 9, 2017 and will end on February 3, 2017.
2. Place trees curbside at 6:00 a.m. on your scheduled Recycling Day. Please do not put trees outside days prior as they can be buried by snow or blown into streets causing a safety hazard. All trees must be free of decorations, lights, and plastic bags.
3. Trees can also be brought to the City Transfer Station on 475 Asylum Street, Bridgeport.
Hours of Operation:
Monday – Friday: 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Saturday: 7:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Closed for lunch daily from noon-12:45 p.m.
Transfer Station closed on Sundays, Holidays and during Snow Emergencies
