“The Place To Be” – Officials Celebrate Groundbreaking For Marriott Hotel At Steelpointe Harbor

City Council President Aidee Nieves who represents the East Side 137th Council District was raised a stone’s throw from the soil that is now earthing a new Residence Inn by Marriott.

Addressing the media and a throng of city stakeholders on Wednesday, Nieves declared “This is gonna be the place to be.”

In more ways than one.

By next summer Nieves and council partner Maria Valle will likely have more than 500 new constituents at The August, the adjacent 425-unit luxury apartment building under construction, 20 percent set aside as work force housing including studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom layouts, at Steelpointe Harbor.

Governor Ned Lamont and state development commissioner Daniel O’Keefe joined Mayor Joe Ganim, other city officials, and executives from True North Hotel Group, RCI Group, Marriott, and KBE Construction for the groundbreaking.

The six-story hotel will feature 142 rooms with views of Steelpointe Marina, direct access to I-95, Metro-North Railroad and Amtrak. Construction is expected to take 18-20 months. Bridgeport has been without a hotel since the closing of the former Holiday Inn Downtown, converted into housing.

From the beginning, our vision has been to create a dynamic waterfront destination that brings jobs, investment, and vitality back to the city. This new Residence Inn by Marriott reflects our long-term commitment to Bridgeport’s growth and to Connecticut’s economic future. We’re deeply grateful to Governor Lamont, Mayor Ganim, Commissioner O’Keefe, and all of our state and local partners for their collaboration and shared belief in what Steelpointe can mean for this community.”

Chris Harlow, Executive Vice President of True North Hotel Group, stated: “True North Hotel Group is proud to join the Bridgeport community with the development of this new Residence Inn by Marriott. We’re excited to bring our hospitality expertise back to Connecticut and to be part of the energy and progress happening here at Steelpointe Harbor. In his remarks, Governor Lamont noted, “This hotel will bring much-needed lodging to the Bridgeport region for travelers’ work and leisure activities, and will enhance our efforts to grow the economic vitality of our state’s largest city.”

Mayor Ganim added, I’d like to thank Bobby Christoph Jr. from the RCI Group, Governor Lamont, and Commissioner O’Keefe for the persistent belief in Bridgeport and allowing us the opportunity to create more economic growth, local jobs and development in our city,” stated Mayor Ganim. “As we continue our work to revitalize our waterfront with local partners, I’m proud to say that we’re not only revamping this space for Bridgeport residents to enjoy, but we are also opening ourselves to more tourism. The development of the new Residence Inn by Marriott is a true testament to Bridgeport heading in the right direction while we continuously find ways to create new amenities for residents and visitors.”
