Bridgeport Banner Editor Rob Sullivan has submitted paperwork with the state forming a candidate committee to challenge State Rep. Auden Grogins, the blonde banshee from Black Rock, in a Democratic primary.
Jim Fox, who ran for City Council in the Black Rock district last year, is serving as Sully’s treasurer. The 129th State Assemby District that Grogins represents includes Black Rock, the West Side and portions of the West End and lower North End.
Grogins is a relentless worker who pays close attention to constituent work having taken out Bob Keeley, the city’s longest-serving legislator in history, in a 2008 Democratic primary. Sully is one of those guys everyone seems to like but putting your name on the ballot is a whole different story. He’ll need to find a wedge issue that draws a clear contrast with Grogins. If his initial statements are any indication Sully plans to run as an outsider who will link Grogins to the city’s political establishment and her embrace of state control of city schools. Grogins is a former member of the Board of Education.
Grogins will keep her focus on the goodies she has delivered to her district such as money for school renovations, streetscape improvements and fighting to maintain state education funding to the city. Grogins is a member of the Education Committee.
One of the keys for Sully is qualifying for the state’s public financing program that will guarantee a $25,000 infusion for his run. He has scheduled his first fundraiser for March 15 at 7 p.m. at the Catholic War Veterans, 40 Alfred Street in Black Rock.
Grogins has already raised enough dough to qualify for the public financing program. If Sullivan qualifies for a primary it will take place in August.
Don Quixote is alive and well in Bridgeport.
I’ll be Tilting at The Windmill!
Good Luck Sully!!!
The Blonde Banshee? Isn’t that a bit sexist?
Let’s go to the mattresses on this one:
1. sully – place under suspicion or cast doubt upon; “sully someone’s reputation” defile, taint, corrupt, cloud, mar, deflower, impair, vitiate, spoil – make imperfect; “nothing marred her beauty”
I propose Bob “Blue-Eyed Spoiler” Sullivan.
Grrr.
Let’s face facts. Audin Grogins has historically piggybacked existing legislation and taken credit for funding already earmarked for the B.O.Education. Face it, the Cheshire Cat did not do anything for us, absolutely nothing. Sullivan’s many friends, followers and fans agree he’s better than nothing!
Run SULLY Run!!!
*** See Sully run, run Sully run, go Sully go! Someone like Sully would definitely represent the average Joe in Black Rock, no? He’d probably give the job his “full-time attention” no doubt! Besides, how are things going and looking on the other side of the political fence? *** RUN SULLY RUN! ***
