State NAACP Jabs Malloy–Response: Hold On A Minute

The Connecticut NAACP isn’t wasting any time reminding Governor-elect Dan Malloy that urban areas produced for him on Election Day but Malloy’s spokesman Roy Occhiogrosso tells OIB the salvo fired by the state branch’s president about representation on Malloy’s transition team is misplaced, and the official transition team hasn’t yet been announced. Here’s the NAACP statement:

Malloy’s Transition Team Lack of Diversity is Shameful

*HARTFORD* – The Connecticut State Conference NAACP Branches President Scot X Esdaile raised serious concerns about the lack of diversity within Governor Elect Dan Malloy’s high command today. So far the names that we received pertaining to Dan Malloy’s transition team are:

Nancy Wyman, Tim Bannon, Colleen Flanagan, Howard Rifkin, Lauri Aronson (Tim Bannon’s Wife), Mark Ojakian, David McQuade, Kevin Sullivan, Bill Curry, Ben Barnes.

“The lack of diversity in Dan Malloy’s transition team is a slap in the face to all of the urban areas in the State of Connecticut. Clearly Dan Malloy would not have been elected if the minority communities did not come out in record numbers on election day,” Esdaile said. “Only time will tell, but we demand substantial representation at the table,” he also added.

Occhiogrosso says Wyman, Bannon, Flanagan, Aranson and Ojakian are members of the transition team. Rifkin, McQuade, Sullivan and Curry are not on the transition team. Barnes, who Malloy announced the other day will serve as state budget director, also is not a member of the transition team. “It’s disappointing that they did not contact us first,” says Occhiogrosso about the NAACP statement, adding that the full transition team will be announced officially in a few days and will represent a cross section of guidance from state leaders. Statement from Bannon:

BANNON: WE’RE HAPPY TO HAVE A DISCUSSION ABOUT DIVERSITY

(HARTFORD, CT) – Tim Bannon, Co-Chair of Governor-Elect Dan Malloy’s transition efforts, released the following statement.

“It’s unfortunate that the NAACP chose not to discuss their concerns with us first before sending out a press release. The fact is that the transition team has not yet been named. Some of the names they cite are wrong, and there are other people who will be joining the team whose names they don’t even have. If the NAACP would like to discuss diversity within the transition team or the future administration, we’re happy to have that discussion.”

What gives with this criticism so soon? It’s simply an elbow to Malloy’s ribs not to forget folks that delivered. Like Malloy needs reminding of the pluralities in New Haven, Bridgeport and Hartford?

  1. What is Malloy crying about? His MO forever has been to spring a press release/press conference on a rival instead of calling them on the phone (it’s happened several times just this year).

  2. Local Eyes thinks Connecticut NAACP President Scot X Esdaile deserves a slap in the face for making a demand of the the Governor-elect.

It’s moments like this I’m happy to say you don’t represent me, Esdaile!

Furthermore, if Esdaile wants to take credit for the minority community electing Dan Malloy governor, Local Eyes will blame Esdaile for the pandemonium that ensued on election day and brought national disgrace to Bridgeport. The NAACP did nothing to assist what were obviously new voters. The NAACP had a fantastic chance to advance the interests of colored people.

You might have an excuse but you do not have a reason.

  3. *** My goodness, only 2 weeks after the election & it’s “what have you done for me lately?” Typical response, shoot from the hip then ask questions later, no? *** Time will tell. ***

  5. I think Scott has a right to question Governor-elect Malloy. If it had not been for the urban vote the Democratic Party would have lost the election. Congressman Himes would have lost–and Governor-elect Malloy would have lost. Out of all the people named so far to his transition team, none of them could have motivated our communities to come out in record numbers to vote for the Democratic party. All one has to do is look at the numbers. Remember people lie, but numbers don’t.
