Marie Heller has kept the books of the Bridgeport Democratic Town Committee for decades. State Democratic officials have notified local Dems her Shelton residence conflicts with local rules.
More from Brian Lockhart, CT Post:
Connecticut’s largest city’s Democratic Party is again embroiled in controversy, this time because its long-time treasurer, Marie Heller, works but does not reside in Bridgeport in violation of the town committee’s rules.
State Democratic leaders are warning their local counterparts to fix the situation either by replacing her or rewriting their by-laws to accommodate her — or essentially face being treated as a non-entity.
“If they don’t, it basically invalidates them as a town committee,” explained attorney Kevin Reynolds, who serves as counsel to the Democratic State Central Committee and also happens to be the hired lobbyist at the Capitol building in Hartford for Bridgeport Democratic Mayor Joe Ganim’s administration. “That’s the Draconian measure. We wouldn’t allow them to seek delegates, participate in the state convention, anything Democratic Party-related.”
Heller, a Shelton resident who also is employed by the city running the municipal department on aging, did not respond to requests for comment.
