From Mayor Finch:
City Prepares for Rare Early Season Winter Storm
Mayor Bill Finch addressed the media at a press conference on Friday afternoon to discuss the City of Bridgeport’s preparations for a potential rare early season winter storm predicted to hit the region on Saturday.
According to the current predicted path, the City is not expected to see of the worst elements of the storm.
“Our plows are ready to roll if needed, and we will be closely monitoring this storm this evening and all day tomorrow,” said Mayor Finch. The Mayor did not call for residents to heed alternate side of the street parking rules at this time, but said if the storm’s path changed, and it becomes necessary, the ordinance would be enacted.
The City’s Emergency Management Center will monitor the storm’s progress. At this time, it’s expected to hit the Bridgeport area sometime late Saturday morning and should be over by late Saturday evening.
Forecasters predict high winds, up to 30-40 miles per hour which could result in downed trees and power lines. To report such damage, Mayor Finch asks that residents call (203) 576-1311.
To report power outages, call United Illuminating’s emergency number (800) 722-5584. To report gas emergencies, leave the building and call (203) 335-0157. To report storm water drainage emergencies call (203) 576-7249. For all life threatening emergencies call 911.
Residents are asked to stay alert to all weather reports and emergency announcements by tuning in to local media outlets.
STORM TIPS:
· In case of power outages, do not use candles or open flames for light or heat.
· Maintain an adequate supply of heating fuel. Keep a list of emergency fuel suppliers.
· Have a portable radio and flash light on-hand with fresh batteries and backup batteries stored.
· Check all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to assure they are in good working condition.
· Give yourself enough time to get to your destination if traveling. Always leave enough space between you and the driver in front of you. Please do not make any quick lane changes. Drive with caution and lights on.
· Keep your car in good working order; battery, tires, antifreeze, windshield wipers and fluid, full tank of gas, and add dry gas to prevent freezing. Stay tuned to radio for alerts or warnings. Maintain a winter storm kit with a container of sand or kitty litter, shovel, windshield scraper or de-icer, rope in case of towing, flashlight, blanket, gloves, and a cellular phone.
· Avoid overexertion such as shoveling snow or pushing a car if you are unaccustomed to it. Cold weather puts an extra strain on the heart. Dress to fit the weather! Layers of loose clothing trap body heat. Cover your mouth and face to protect from the cold.
· Make sure catch basins or drains are clear of debris or snow to prevent the backup of water.
Snow is like sex. You don’t know when it’s going to happen, how long it will last, or how many inches there will be.
Winchester is a smiling girl today, Bob. She got 21 inches!!! 🙂
