Shake-Up In North End Politics, Lyons Aligns With New City Council Candidate Dubac

Loretta Dubac, running for City Council.

They’ve spent about 20 years together on the City Council representing the North End 134th District but the partnership between veteran legislators Michelle Lyons and AmyMarie Vizzo-Paniccia has ended, according to political insiders.

What happened?

Nothing is forever in politics. You spend that much time together and things may fray, and that’s the situation. OIB has reached out to both council members for comment.

Lyons has aligned herself with Loretta Dubac, a Democratic town committee member from the district, president of her condo association active with the parent advisory council for John Winthrop School.

Will Vizzo-Paniccia land a running partner? It appears the majority of the town committee members of the district that decide the endorsement are lining up with Lyons and Dubac for the upcoming convention in a few weeks. That means Vizzo-Paniccia and potential running mate must secure district signatures for a September primary.

If Vizzo-Paniccia eschews another council campaign, running for Board of Education may be an option with city-wide party backing. Party regulars say the search is still on to fill out the would-be endorsed candidates for school board.

Dubac was considered a potential school board candidate until Lyons reached out to her.

This is a sleepy off-cycle with candidates for school board and City Council leading the ticket.

The next mayoral year is 2027.
