Senator Gaston Highlights New Laws

I’m writing to share some important updates from the Capitol. Over the past few weeks, several key bills have been signed into law. These new measures are designed to address issues that matter deeply to our community, from improving public safety and education to strengthening local infrastructure and supporting working families.

Last year, we created the “Fallen Officer Fund” that provides a lump sum to the surviving family of law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty. The Governor has officially signed into law an expansion of the fund to include firefighters, EMTs and paramedics, and allows certain survivors to retain their health coverage.

The Governor has also signed new signed legislation that will protect homeowners from foreclosure threats tied to long-dormant second mortgages, often called “zombie mortgages”. These are loans that many borrowers believed had been forgiven or resolved years ago, only to have collection efforts suddenly resume as property values rise.

Finally, it is with great pride that I share that the Governor has signed into law creating the “Connecticut-Puerto Rico Trade Commission.” Bridgeport is home to a vibrant Puerto Rican community that has contributed to our state’s culture, economy, and spirit. This partnership will work to advance economic opportunities, foster cultural exchange, and deepen our mutual support, while ensuring that the voices of Connecticut’s Puerto Rican population are heard.
