Last Thursday, to thunderous applause, City Councilwoman Maria Pereira was escorted out of City Hall Chambers by police for threatening a school bus driver during a public hearing before a council committee to revisit an ordinance that restricts large commercial vehicles from parking on city streets carrying a $250 fine.
Pereira was arrested for disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.
The school bus drivers seek a carve out from the heavy commercial vehicles impacting quality of life on city streets. City officials are reworking language to bring back to the legislative body for action.
Pereira promises a lawsuit if the council votes for an exemption for bus drivers, something Eneida Martinez vehemently supports, even slipping into a rubber bus at the last full council meeting to hammer home her point.
Last week’s packed public hearing took place before the Ordinance Committee that Martinez co chairs.
A number of citizens are signed up to speak tonight (Monday) during the public speaking portion of the council meeting including Pereira.
