The Connecticut Working Families Party announced on Tuesday it has endorsed incumbent State Senators Marilyn Moore and Ed Gomes as they challenge party-endorsed candidates in August 9 Democratic primaries. The endorsement does not mean they will appear on the WFP line in November irrespective of the primary results. The WFP will make an endorsement decision for November after the primary. But a WFP endorsement brings key campaign elements that could include strategy, canvassers and a field operation, all essential ingredients to identify primary voters and drag them out.
The WFP has had growing influence in city campaigns, electing members to the Board of Education and in Gomes’ case he carried the WFP banner winning a special election in February 2015.
WFP news release:
Today the Connecticut Working Families Party announced that it is endorsing Marilyn Moore for State Senate in the 22nd District (Bridgeport, Monroe, Trumbull) and Ed Gomes for State Senate in the 23rd District (Bridgeport, Stratford). Both Marilyn Moore and Ed Gomes are running as incumbents against two up and coming challengers, Tom McCarthy and Dennis Bradley respectively.
“Senator Moore has shown herself to be one of the most honest, committed legislators who has consistently gotten results for her constituents in Bridgeport, Monroe and Trumbull.” said Lindsay Farrell, Executive Director of the Connecticut Working Families Party. “For over 40 years Senator Gomes has been a fixture in his community, fighting tooth and nail to provide economic security and social justice for his constituents. The WFP is proud to continue supporting such immense progressive champions.”
Every year the Working Families Party takes a close look at every candidate and endorses the ones who will most effectively build political power for working and middle class families and the unemployed. Candidates endorsed by the Working Families Party are champions on issues like raising the minimum wage, paid family and medical leave, solving the massive problem of student debt and standing up to harmful layoffs and cuts to essential services in our state budget. The nomination comes with the grassroots support of the Working Families Party and its formidable door-to-door voter mobilization program.
“I am proud to have received the endorsement of the Working Families Party, together we have fought for retirement security, paid family leave, and a $15/hour minimum wage.” said Senator Marilyn Moore. “I am enthusiastic and confident that together we will continue the march for justice through this campaign cycle and into the next legislative session.”
“I’m very happy to again receive the Working Families Party’s endorsement.” said Senator Gomes. “My life in public service has been about fighting for the needs of working people and their families, by raising wages and benefits, and bringing integrity to government. With another term in the State Senate I will continue to make sure you have a voice in the legislature.”
Congratulations, Senators.
Now get to work and make this endorsement mean a lot.
Only kidding. Keep up the good work representing the city and surrounding areas.
Did McCarthy actually seek their endorsement?
He does know a thing about the Working Families.
McCarthy probably thinks the Working Families Party is for Democratic officials who have multiple family members on the city payroll.
Oops, if that is the case then maybe McCarthy qualifies because someone told me he got his brother a job with the BOE when Tommy was still a city employee.
