From Governor Malloy:
AFTER LISTENING TO CONNECTICUT’S CITIZENS AT TOWN HALL MEETINGS, GOV. MALLOY REVISES TAX PACKAGE; REINSTATES PROPERTY TAX CREDIT TO $300
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy today reflected on his first 100 days in office and the 17 Town Hall Meetings he held across the state. Governor Malloy began those meetings on February 21 in Bridgeport and finished on April 12 in Middletown. Taking into account the concerns raised, Governor Malloy today announced that he would reinstate the property tax credit to $300. In addition, his revised tax package lessens the burden on the vast majority of the middle class.
“At various points along the way, people wrote that maybe I wasn’t listening–that maybe I was just on a venting tour–and that in the end I wouldn’t change anything in my budget proposal,” said Governor Malloy. “With all due respect, the people who said that weren’t listening to what I was saying. All along, I’ve been saying the same thing: this budget is based on a set of principles from which I will not back down. But I also said that within the framework of those principles I’ve been trying to find the right balance, and that I was open to listening to people’s ideas.”
Today marks Governor Malloy’s 100th day in office.

I really have nothing against the wealthy classes. If too much of that wealth is derived from cheating on personal income taxes, that’s when I have an issue. Don’t get me wrong. We all cut corners on the journey through this life, buying and selling goods for cash, working under the table, etc. Why should the middle classes bear most of the costs of government? Everyone ought to and must pay an equal share of the burden.
I hope the people of Bridgeport realize if Malloy does not get concessions from the State Unions, the city will not receive $67 million in funding!!!
There’s a difference between Finch and Malloy when it comes to the unions. Finch made a deal with AFSCME that traded no concessions for union support of Finch in 2011. Quid Pro Quo. Illegal. Unethical. On both sides. Malloy at least has the integrity not to make these side deals.
Last election the AFSCME leaders manned the phones and went door to door for Finch. Now they watch as their brothers and sisters in the other unions suffer layoffs and concessions while AFSCME sits back and enjoys their favored status. This is exactly what is wrong with unions and politics.
We all know this, Charlie. Everyone who contributes to the blog is more than functionally literate. Excluding Ernie “Moses” Newton, of course. His syntax is about as logical as tits on a bull.
There are some fence sitters among the Democrats as well. A certain percentage of registered Democrats in Bridgeport will cast their vote for Bill Finch come September 13th. That’s a given. And there are already percentages that will vote for Charlie Coviello, John Gomes or Mary-Jane Foster. Most voters are undecided, a large bloc. What are the candidates saying to appeal to the undecided?
• Other than incumbency Bill Finch does not have much to go on. He’s done a less-than-stellar job so incumbency ain’t exactly in his favor.
• Charlie Coviello is railing against the BOE and the pathetic state of Bridgeport’s public education system. A noble cause but d-d-dude, you were thrown out of a BOE meeting and ordered off the property. Don’t be an asshole.
• John M. Gomes wants to reform City Hall. Hey man, we all do. Go for it. How you gonna deal with The Machine? You already tangled with them once.
• Mary-Jane Foster is talking about creating employment opportunities and reforming city government. The former is a little more important. No one gives a damn about politics if they aren’t working.
Politics ain’t ever easy. We have a two-party system, essentially. There have been other parties but the only two flavors to choose from are conservative and liberal. Within those two schools of political thought, though, there are many philosophies. The lines and definitions become a little blurry when the word “moderate” is uttered. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania is a “moderate” Republican, meaning he stands in the middle of the road.
That’s exactly what I’m saying and that arrogant little sonofabitch is running the city. Now you see why it’s such a disaster.
When 8 families were left homeless by a fire in Black Rock, Finch showed up and spoke at length with the owner of a business that was destroyed. He showed little sympathy for the displaced tenants. Maybe he mistook them for illegal immigrants, meaning that they can’t vote …
George W. Bush had to be dragged, kicking and screaming the whole way, to Walter Reed Army Hospital to visit with wounded servicemen. Bush also had to be “made” to do the Presidential thing in ’05 after Hurricane Katrina made a mess of New Orleans.
Finch is not the kind of man to show much empathy for the common man. He claims to care about the lives of the people of the city of Bridgeport. His actions tell another story. All of those walking tours of crime-blighted neighborhoods were a public-relations stunt, a lame attempt to curry favor with Latino and African American voters. When eight families were left homeless by a fire in Black Rock some weeks ago Finch showed up. He spoke at length with one of the business owners affected by the fire, who coincidentally is also a City Councilman. He chatted up a few of the tenants but that was it. I was reminded of George W. Bush’s trip to the Gulf Coast of Mississippi after Katrina. He told Trent Lott, a hardcore racist US Senator from that state, “We’ll help you rebuild, Trent!” Translation: fuck everyone else.
