“A complete revamp,” explained Thomas Gaudett, Ganim’s chief administrative officer. “All meter heads gone.”
He’s talking over 600 individual pieces of equipment, plus the poles. The few outlying meters in the North End around St. Vincent’s Medical Center would also be on the chopping block.
“It will probably be an aesthetic upgrade to switch to the kiosks,” Gaudett said.
Though that is a side benefit of the estimated $500,000 project, which still needs funding approval from the City Council during the current spring municipal budget season.

Can I use my old City Council placard with the new machines?
This is a wonderful decision! I know, moving to unmetered parking would be best. But kiosks work really well. I’ve used them in Boston. I write from Pittsburgh, where my grandson lives. The kiosks here (same kiosks in city and some suburbs, too) use the MeterFeeder app so you can pay and manage parking from your phone.
We need to tip our hats to the late Steve Auerbach, a prolific writer here on OIB, whose last work was a position with the city’s parking authority to supervise installing the current generation of web enabled parking meters, which also required curbside excavation to bri g power and internet to the meters. It was a labor of love and dedication for Steve. I’d like to think he’d also be championing this improvement.
He’d also be reviewing for OIB the latest restaurants in town after taking his mom out to dinner and a movie.
