Key Budget Committee Meetings This Week

The City Council’s Budget & Appropriations Committee is scheduled to meet three times this week to get into the meat of Mayor Joe Ganim’s proposed spending plan including Thursday night to review the Board of Education, General Budget and Capital Plan in the first floor Wheeler Rooms of City Hall, 45 Lyon Terrace.

Ganim’s proposed $638 million spending plan keeps taxes flat while adding $3 million more to education, about $14 million less than requested. As is usually the case, the budget relies on financial assumptions as the state legislature completes its budget process over the next several weeks.

The $3 million extra for education is the largest one-year increase by Ganim since his return to the mayoralty in 2015, but the district faces a fiscal cliff from dried up federal Covid relief.

The budget committee will meet Monday night in the Wheeler Rooms to review Civil Service, Human Resources and Labor Relations & Benefits.

Wednesday it will review the City Attorney’s Office and Chief Administrative Office in the Legislative Services Office, 999 Broad Street.
