From school board member Joe Sokolovic regarding Appropriations Committee Public Hearing on the Governor’s Proposed Budget for Elementary & Secondary Ed Agencies
Hello OIB,
On March 1st there will be a state public hearing regarding the education budget. I urge all those on OIB to please register to speak. Bridgeport education has been chronically underfunded for decades. There are a variety of topics related to the inadequate funding of our budget. There is the chronic underfunding of PILOT which leaves fewer local dollars for investment (we will address Bridgeport’s budgetary shortcomings with Bridgeport when appropriate). The disproportionate placement of social responsibility on Bridgeport, it hampers us from growing our tax base. For example, a waterfront kiddie jail, multiple courthouses and a disproportionate amount of affordable housing to name a few.
Bridgeport has a higher need for dollars than other municipalities due to the aforementioned factors along with concentrated poverty. If surrounding towns insist on keeping the status quo and refuse to bear their share of social responsibility, then they should be subject to a sin tax in the form of funding the districts whose children they keep out by zoning that prevents the “character” of their towns and neighborhoods from changing. Please click the link below. If anybody would like assistance please feel free to email me at JSokolovic@Bridgeportedu.net.
Apologies all. Rushing through my to do list and failed to emphasize that the public hearing I am referring to is the state appropriations public hearing in regards to education.
