Mayoral candidate John Gomes issued an apology on his Facebook page for the campaign now more than two weeks late filing the latest finance report required by state law. The Town Clerk’s Office has alerted his campaign treasurer Maria Figueroa that a fine will be assessed either by that office or the State Elections Enforcement Commission depending on the length of delay.
The Gomes campaign has often tooted “transparency” as a key promise and platform.
Gomes statement.
As the mayoral candidate for Bridgeport, I want to take full responsibility for the oversight regarding our campaign’s fundraising and expense report deadline. Missing this deadline was a mistake, and I apologize for any concerns this may have raised.
Our team acknowledges the importance of adhering to both hard and soft deadlines. To rectify this, I have given strict orders to our campaign staff to ensure that we meet all deadlines promptly, both now and moving forward.
I understand the town clerk’s notification regarding the required fundraising and expense report. We will submit the necessary paperwork and pay the $100 fine as per the statutory requirement. We are committed to fulfilling our legal obligations promptly, and I assure you that there will be no further delays.
Transparency is a fundamental principle of my campaign. I have consistently stated my commitment to running a more transparent government. In this spirit, we will take care of this matter accordingly, and I am confident that our campaign will continue to operate in a financially responsible and transparent manner.
Regarding the ongoing legal battle to overturn the primary results, it has understandably occupied a significant portion of our campaign’s resources and attention. While this is a critical matter, we recognize that we must also manage other campaign responsibilities efficiently.
I want to assure our supporters and the people of Bridgeport that our campaign is in sound economic condition, and we are continuing to receive contributions, pay our bills, and plan for the upcoming election. The claim that we are trying to conceal a depleted war chest is unfounded.
I appreciate the support of our team and our allies who are committed to the principles of our campaign. We are determined to stay focused on our strategy for November.
Finally, I understand that there may be questions about the costs related to our legal battle. At this time, we are not commenting on that matter. Our primary focus is on addressing the needs and concerns of the people of Bridgeport, and we will continue to do so with transparency and dedication.
