Firefighters Battle East End Blaze

From Doing It Local

Firefighters battled a very large fire at the corner of Fifth Street and Stratford Avenue this afternoon. Witnesses tell me there was a loud pop before the fire broke out. Firefighters searched the building twice before the blaze got really big and found everyone got out of the building safely. They had the fire under control within an hour and were picking up their equipment by 3:45pm. There were no injuries fighting the fire. Stratford and Fairfield provided mutual aid to Bridgeport to cover empty firehouses. It was needed when there was a gas leak on Worth Street at 3:39pm. The fire marshal is on scene investigating.

  1. Bob, I don’t blame this fire on Andre Baker, however it is surprising Malloy, Finch and Baker are not shown in this video holding a press conference highlighting the free smoke detector program. After all, we are in the height of election season.

    1. That is so heartless. Thank God no one was killed. If city sponsored smoke detectors were to thank for that, congrats to the city. My prayers go out to those poor souls who lost their homes. May this kind of tragedy never darken your door.

  2. Maria, the Firebird Society ran the first free smoke director drive in the city about 20 years ago. We did it because smoke detectors save lives and most of the people dying in Bridgeport are black and Latino. Cannot stand Finch, but I wouldn’t have a problem with anything he said or did to get detectors into the homes of the residents of Bridgeport.
