Councilman Cruz Shifts Into Higher Gear, Ponders Mayoral Run

Jorge Cruz

If nothing else, it will be entertaining if Jorge Cruz gets in.

The city councilman from the 131st District covering Downtown, South End and pieces of The Hollow and West End, is contemplating a run for mayor in 2027.

You bark at Jorge, he barks back. Sometimes you don’t even have to bark, such is Jorge. He tells you how he feels. To his credit, he records every City Council meeting on his Facebook page, sometimes interjecting humorous running monologue.

By way of background, he was born in Puerto Rico and moved with his family to Bridgeport when he was five years old. Fond of martial arts, handball and Yankee baseball, he works in the addiction services community.

Cruz mixes it up at council meetings and at martial arts class.

When you examine city assets his district represents the city’s largest: Seaside Park, University of Bridgeport, Housatonic Community College, main branch library, arena, amphitheater, City Hall, police and fire departments, growing arts community, central business district, M&T Bank regional headquarters, including thousands of housing units public and private.

Once an ally of Mayor Joe Ganim, Cruz supported John Gomes for mayor in 2023 in that craziest of all municipal election cycles, that extended into 2024 following court intervention in the absentee ballot scandal that has produced state charges against operatives of both Ganim and Gomes.

If Cruz follows through with a primary run, he’d have to petition his way onto the ballot securing signatures from five percent of the Democratic electorate, or in lieu of that a minor party candidacy in the general election.

From Cruz Facebook page:

I don’t know what’s happening with me but for some reason my spirit is prompting me to make a RUN FOR MAYOR OF BRIDGEPORT CT. I’m sick and tired of the same old bullshit that has betrayed the citizens of Bridgeport CT. This I will say, any debates will be RAW AND NOT DIPLOMATIC. I will call the bullshit in their faces for what it is, whether it’s on radio or television. Enough of the deceitful and lies from the status quo’s. Blacks and Puerto Ricans need to stop being so ignorant and stupid and start thinking about the future of our people in Bridgeport CT. We are the majority and we should act like we are and stop the divisive bullshit with the hypocrisy , back door deals and the sickening constant backstabbing . Let’s do this, start by telling the current corrupt leader Mario “Mr Magoo” Testos to take a hike back to Shelton . YES WE CAN . WHAT DO YOU THINK ??

I mean serious business, enough of the bullshit with the fake ass politicians here in Bridgeport CT. For many years they have betrayed the people for their self- serving policies. Its time for policies that benefit the people and hold landlords accountable for their attempts to gentrify our communities. its time to send a strong message to the Ganim dynasty too, your time is up. The Ganim dynasty act like they own Bridgeport with their names all across the city like other dictators do in Russia, North Korea and other countries. Wake the hell up and stop being so complicit with voting these idiots into office.

  1. Speaking of dictator/ Kingship verse democracy. John, you’re an educated, well read, Yale alumni. Is this true, that in the formation of the US of America slavery was debated and voted on?

I would ask WEEPA, but. I am pretty sure he don’t have a clue. Last time I checked my recollection G2 was the best. 🤣

Just playing WEEPA, through true. 🙃

    1. Slavery as a human condition was not debated as such by the founders as it was not only supporting the economies of Southern colonies and present in the North as well. Thus compromise among Colonials to JOIN OR DIE as Franklin observed in 1754 was the overwhelming resistance and then the spark of revolution in the North.
“Rights and liberty” as discussed in documents of the time had more to do with “white skinned males” than it had to do with indigenous people who were present on the land in the 16th Century, or women pilgrims and settlers, or folks of other colors or cultures. Abolition movements present in Europe migrated, and our Federal Legislature passed laws limiting the import of new people of color to be sold into slavery as well as fugitive slave laws were part of the dawning of the 19th Century.
But the original Articles of Confederation and subequent Constitution did not raise “slavery” as a central issue that drew a vote.
Missed you at Saturday’s Casual Civics Conversation at URSA. Severak folks present to discuss the Charter passing and the meaning it may have for City Council and citizen activity as a result of the continuing low percentage of registered voters coming to the polls. Next scheduled Casual Civics Conversation is Saturday, November 29 at Fruta. Likely two more opportunities to attend one in December. Time will tell.

Sure perhaps he wasn’t “specific” but somewhere in those red letters things were implied. You know love thy neighbor thing, treat people the way you want to be treated. Luke Skywalker 4: 18. 🤣

  4. If we as council colleagues can’t get our own shit together on the council, then how can anyone run this City? We can’t even agree to disagree on many things in this City on a council level. How about us trying to bring a black & hispanic caucus together? We can’t even do that!!!! Many don’t show up to committees, many don’t even know the charter, or critical ordinances. Some don’t even know what department to call for replacement of a garbage or recycling tote, but want high ranking leadership titles. Let’s be real here, and stop the shenanigans.

Jorge and I have a great working relationship. We worked together at RNP & DMHAS. I have had no issues with him on the council. But, if we can’t come whole on a local 20 body council, how can a city take any of these council members with egos, disrespect, unprofessional, unethical, disloyal, and the list goes on serious, including myself.

Let’s pull track records on all 20 council members to see the work put into each district they represent, let’s start there. I am not talking about OIB, News 12, CT. Post photo ops. I am talking about REAL CITY BUSINESS!!! Making changes in moving this City forward. I will wait to see how many come back with actual stamped receipts, not rubber stamped receipts.

I will take a challenge anytime. I have proven my record of serving this city. Outside of my flaws, I still maintain an excellent track record as a leader in the 139th, and this City. Like me or hate me my heart is pure.

    1. How many Council contenders run on their record? Do enough registered voters know what the record can show? How many folks know about the “Ask Your Council” project? What are your thoughts on CIVICS for citizens, an opportunity to welcome neighbors for a short and casual conversation at a safe place, a convenient time, a welcome location for learning. Will that improve citizen knowledge of City governance, reveal what, if anything, goes on behind the scenes? Who posts the track records in a form that can be published regularly on the City website and consulted by anyone? What topics are to be included in a general review of Council accomplishments: attendance, participation, or leadership on Committee or liaison assignments; or perhaps regular meetings to hear constituents; and lots more? Who on the City Council will respond to this challenge? Show us your power, and spirit, in truth. Time will tell.

  5. Well said my partner! I’ve had the privilege of being an elected position for over 30+ years starting as the first black president of the City Council at the age of 25 things were a lot different because the men and women that I started with understood what it meant to be an elected official I can truly say having served as President pro of the state Senate and and deputy speaker of the House of Representatives yes you and I have taken a community that once was vibrant and seeing over 20 years, nothing had happened today. We have been able to change our community back to a vibrant community with new housing a great commercial strip, which has a bank a grocery store a restaurant with a new gas station car wash and many other great things has happened in the East End. You have truly worked hard to help turn around our community so that people who live here have a chance to stay here and all my years of public service I’ve never Witnessed The kind of politics that I’ve witnessed these last 10 years and yes, you are truly right that holding the title means more than doing the work. This is my fifth term on the City Council fighting to make our community and our city a better place. We need to understand that titles don’t make the person the person should make the title. we live in the largest city in Connecticut made up a melting pot, but yet we act like the tail wagoning the dog, but I still have Hope that one day. We will realize we have the power to change the lives of the people we serve no man or woman is an island under themselves. I just hope that we realize that when we point fingers at one another, we got four pointing back at us as someone says only time will tell Peace beyond you.

  6. Unfortunately most people in Bpt do not hold our councilors or for that matter this administration in high regard. The overall sentiment is “they are all crooks & cheats”.. I sure some will take exception to that, but it’s the truth…

    1. Harvery,
And most people do not vote, though they may pay taxes, register to vote, and obey other rules and laws. Some have said they don’t vote as a choice. But what does it say when 90% or more of your neighbors are silent about their hopes, dreams, and wishes? Are we in that place now? Time will tell.
