Despite record low crime in 2025, community engagement, walking patrols, beefing up police personnel, technology advancements, and renewed working relationships with state and federal law enforcement agencies, Police Chief Roderick Porter’s management style has not pleased some of the unionized members of the department.

For the second time in a year the city has hired outside counsel to probe claims Police Chief Roderick Porter, personally or through surrogates, abuses his authority and lords over a hostile and intimidating work environment.
“The City Attorney’s office has retained Jackson Lewis to review the complaints involving the chief,” Tyisha Toms, who helms the municipal law department, confirmed Wednesday.
Jackson Lewis is a nationwide firm specializing in employment and labor law.
Porter, a retired captain whom Mayor Joe Ganim rehired to run the force in late 2022 following a national search, declined comment when reached Thursday.
Toms’ decision was prompted by a widely-circulated eight-page letter Lt. Jason Amato, an employee of two-plus decades whom Porter reassigned from an anti-gang unit in 2022, emailed Mayor Joe Ganim on Monday. Amato accused Porter of making inappropriate comments about personnel he dislikes and retaliating against those who challenge him.
