Implosion Of Candy-Striped Smokestack Scheduled For September 29

Bridgeport smokestack
Bridgeport power plant poised for demolition.

An official with the development firm charged with demolishing the decommissioned power plant in the South End has announced September 29, in the wee hours of the morning, as the date to implode the iconic candy-striped smokestack to avoid any potential debris and disruption to the Soundside Music Festival at Seaside Park which ends the night prior.

Chad Parks of Bridgeport Station Development has been in discussions with city officials to select a time that causes the least disruption to highway, train and ferry service along the harbor. 4 a.m. is the likely time for the implosion. I-95 traffic will be closed down for a period to avoid driver distraction.

Six months ago Governor Ned Lamont announced a state commitment of $22.5 million for the demolition of the decommissioned power plant in the South End, featuring the smokestack on a 33-acre parcel along the waterfront many view as a symbol of the city’s shadowy industrial past and environmental wreckage.

Bridgeport Station Development LLC, a brownfields specialty group whose principals have experience imploding smokestacks, was introduced as the new owner of Bridgeport Harbor Station Unit 3, with the responsibility to demolish the power plant, remediate the site and develop it with a mixed-use of housing and complementary waterfront engagement in the South End neighborhood.

The state grant solely covers the demolition. The developer is responsible for any other costs including repurposing the land under conditions set froth by the state.

  1. IDK people, Port? Housing, perhaps a hotel?

Hotel? What are the people coming to the Port for? Doesn’t sound like it’s part of the Port’s vision development plan as a tourist entertainment East Coast destination. Perhaps some kind a Civic, conference center attraction that will ferry people to the Port’s water development. I would like to see an outdoor/indoor-ish outlet mall, with the Port’s stack as an iconic symbol of the Port. JS

Lets see if we can decode this people, Port?

Full disclosure poeple click count a coming for the Best ESL Class Ever.🤣

  2. It’s Port’s prime real estate for Housing for the wealthier people. Not to mention they’re going to bribe the Port’s City Council and mayor’s office, I mean “perk” them up and get a tax break for 75 years. SMH 🙂

What say you “Coast Guards of Long Island sound, People (Jeff’s Gold Coast not you. We know your intent/action for the Port) 🙂

Doesn’t a Port outlet mall/ civic center, entertainment destination like a Port Jefferson of the Bridgeport, sounds better with a tax base for the Port as whole more that a housing for the wealthier among us?

Perhaps some type of destination for the Kids. P.S Beijing the Port still wants those Pandas, They took the Port’s elephants . 🤣

Jesus, Joseph, Mary, Muhammad, somethings are just ridiculous on the surface. 🤣

  3. Think of it, the stack as a billboard that represents physical maturity, spiritual perfection, and a time of purification, transformation, and divine revelation.

Or the Stack and just be a landmark for medicinal purposes to let less incline people know they hit the Port. 🙂

True story, drunk/buzzed one night, driving home for a downtown Shelton bar hooped on Rt8 going the wrong way. Didn’t realize it until I hit Waterbury’s Cross, I hit you not, It was before my OIB ESL Class. Keep it between us OIB’s 🙂

  4. On the water you want the high end houses and condos. Need to have the rich stay in Bpt so that it’s finally taken serious. You can’t have all the money in Black Rock.

  5. Knock it all down then build apartments, that’s what Bpt needs more apartments! Friends and I took the ferry last week, when at the dock, you can’t help but notice the massive apartment building going up at Steel point,I hadn’t realized the it was going to be so big.. geez..The beginnings of a “Co-Op city” growing ever so slowly on Bpt’s beloved Steel Point?

  6. It can’t stay if apartments are the plan, However, for me it’s about drawing in people to the Port as a tourist destination. The Port can’t be just about housing.

Off topic, but related on a worldly affair.

I thought the a Soccer stadium was political bullshit in your coded sides game, jockeying/fighting for position.

This shit is monstrous. Though to be to fair I suspect this had happened in Syria but world didn’t voiced it’s opinion, gave a shit because it wasn’t done by “white” people with the backing/bombing by racist America.

No, Port, resolution, or public outrage/debate. JS
