For decades Helen Losak was an urban-warrior presence at City Council meetings and zoning board sessions, a voice for the Upper East Side fighting issues impacting quality of life. She stood her ground against political power, sometimes as a solo voice. She passed away June 7 at age 69.
Losak was among the numerous from the neighborhood once aligned, but then fell out, with City Councilwoman Maria Pereira. It was Losak who was among the first to point out Pereira’s hypocrisy regarding absentee ballots, saying one thing, doing another. It caught the attention of law enforcement.
Pereira is fighting multiple state charges of alleged absentee ballot fraud.

I was surprised to see Helen Losak’s obituary in the CT Post this week.
She was a citizen who understood CIVICS to reference both the rights and responsibilities of residing in her District, the City of Bridgeport, State of CT, and United States of America.
She used the public speaking session before the more than 20 City Council meetings each year to factually and respectfully inform all of the Council members of a specific problem, issue, or concern. She was social and friendly to other speakers as well by sharing more info on a given situation based on her experience. That is the type of sharing I hope to spread into all Districts of the City before the November 2025 off-year municipal election. Let’s show an uptrend in voting that is informed by good CIVICS interchange at local conversations.
Helen would have approved and participated. She was a “warrior” if you will, for “citizen rights” that would improve the quality of living for residents of Bridgeport in my opinion. She used her days to benefit others, well, before time did tell. Peace, Helen.
