Awaiting Challengers, Ganim Builds War Chest For 2027

A rematch between Ganim and Gomes.

Mayor Joe Ganim has raised more than $100,000 for his reelection campaign, as he seeks another four-year term in 2027, according to the latest finance report filed with the Town Clerk.

It’s pro forma for incumbents to fill the treasury utilizing power of incumbency. The report reflects roughly $119,000 raised based on the close of the reporting  period September 30. By law municipal candidates are required to file reports quarterly. Ganim will likely triple that fundraising number by summer 2027.

Ganim conducted a fundraiser last week in Black Rock that raised roughly $20,000 which will reflect in the next filing period in January, so he’s closer to the $140K range.

The usual donors – city employees, developers, contractors, lawyers, consultants – are included on the finance report.

No major opposition has emerged at this point but John Gomes, Ganim’s chief rival in 2023, seems poised for another run after that peculiar last mayoral cycle that bled into 2024, court ordered, because of absentee ballot fraud that led to the state arrests of several political operatives on both sides.

Gomes was a prodigious fundraiser during the last cycle. Can he duplicate it or come close to it?

In the last 20 years mayoral elections were decided by primaries, the general election an afterthought because of the diminished ranks among registered Republicans. Now options exist in the general election be it Working Families Party, Bridgeport Independent Party or New Movement Party, a place for the losing Democrat in the primary to land, as Gomes did running on the Independent label, or eschew the primary and go directly to the general election.

During his return to the mayoralty, Ganim has had three close Democratic primaries, defeating incumbent Bill Finch in 2015, then State Senator Marilyn Moore in 2019 and Gomes.

The atmosphere could be very much the same in 2027, depending on a variety of factors.
