After 50 Years Of Entertainment, Downtown Cabaret Slated For Summer Closure

From News 12:

Just a few months after celebrating its 50th anniversary, Bridgeport’s Downtown Cabaret Theatre has announced that it will be shutting its doors following the June run of A Chorus Line.

“We’re really losing something that was very special,” said Bob Scinto, chairman of the theatre.

The final performance will be Sunday, June 28.

“It’s just such an institution, such a landmark in Bridgeport,” said Hugh Hallinan, the theatre’s executive director. “I think it’ll be a long time before people forget about it.”

The theatre first started in the cafeteria at Sacred Heart University before moving into its current building across from City Hall in the 1970s.

At its peak, theatre officials say 60,000-80,000 people came through the doors each year, with many future Broadway performers and crew members getting their start there.

“I love the stories like, ‘I used to bring my children, and now my children bring their children,’” Hallinan said.

However, Hallinan and Scinto say times change.

  1. Bridgeport has lost two identifying institutions within the span of year — the Sound Tiger/Islanders, and now the Cabaret…. For a city that wants to claim to be the entertainment of Connecticut, that can only be described as disastrous. We are sinking further into the abyss. We are not coming back… It seems that we are navigating without any real sort of destination, and without a compass. Time for a new administration with a real plan… (That goes for Bridgeport and the State of Connecticut)…

  2. Really Jeff, the failure of the Caberet is the fault of the administration?
While you are at it why don’t you blame the Ganim administration for the Hindenburg disaster.
The Caberet was a hidden jewel in Bridgeport. It didn’t receive the needed support from the community to survive.
Next hurricane season will be upon us. Maybe you can blame the next named storm on Joe Ganim. We know no matter what you will find fault with whatever way they handle it. Keep up the good work Jeff, you never disappoint.
